I don't think anyone would announce a hotel on that corner without confirmation of the events centre.......

Indeed, this is why I was quite surprised to hear of this rumor of an announcement... I guess that's all it was. I know I certainly wouldn't be interested in building a new hotel overlooking a pile of dirt in a decaying part of downtown.

That said, I was downtown today and the eastern part of Main street was bustling with activity. Too bad it's only for a couple of blocks before you see everything die down. It often gives the impression (real or false) that downtown is constantly on the cusp of a turn around, that there is some potential. And this is in spite of decades of terrible decision-making with little to no planning. If only it had proper support from elected officials at all levels just to give it a nudge.

The provincial government coming out with the new guidelines for entertainment infrastructure investments does offer me some glimmer of hope at least. I was starting to feel as if these guidelines were truly just a stall tactic...

I remember hearing a few months back that Domino's was interested in the property, but I don't know if that ever came to be or not.

I was wondering if the city has any significant programs to incentivize growth downtown. I know of the planning organisations, but I was thinking more in line with tax incentives for residents and businesses.

Just found this little tidbit as part of Councillor Dawn Arnold's regular updates on her Facebook page. This was one of the items on the most recent city council agenda:

Quote:
Rezoning of 11 Intercolonial Way, (Vaughan Harvey and Millennium) from a Business and Technology zone to a Suburban Commercial zone (basically, this will allow for a bank and a couple of restaurants)
This would be the lot of land facing Vaughn Harvey on the other side of Millennium Blvd from that three storey suburban commercial office building.

Five Five Queen has updated their website and changed the anticipated move in ready date from Summer 2016 to Early 2017 - not much of a surprise. It has already been delayed one year and now another delay of at least 6 months. I wouldn't be surprised if current buyers are bailing at this point. May as well get it over with and just cancel the project!

Sad. I called it while hoping to be wrong. I agree that buyers are likely bailing - I certainly wouldn't keep waiting in perpetuity. They probably can't even downscale the project easily, because then they'd lose the top-floor buyers.

I'm unsure if this development has ever been talked about, but it is news to me.

Shannex (shannex.com) is considering the construction, in Moncton, of a residential development complex comprising of one appartment building for ageing people whom are autonomous and residences that offer levels 1, 2 and 3 health services. If l'Université de Moncton conclude an agreement with this business, the complex would be located on campus, near the J.-Raymond-Frenette Building (the medical centre on the opposite side of Morton avenue).

If people on the board are interested, the advisory commitee is currently looking for people's point of view on the project. You can have your voice heard with this survey (in french only).

Something to watch for I suppose. If there is one thing we can certainly bank on, it's the ageing of our population. So, we can certainly be hopefull for this development.

Nope, this has not been discussed specifically, but we have known for some time that U de M is planning on developing their endowment lands on the north side of Morton to provide income to the university. They are planning an entrance roadway opposite their driveway onto Morton and specifically have been muttering about a business park and a hotel.

If this Shannex proposal comes to fruition, the discussion should probably be moved to the [Moncton] East thread.

Why is the survey in French only. Is it because it is directed only towards the university community??

My quick translation:

Also states it could be open in 2017.

So it wouldn't be a public facility?

From what you're saying, it would be a retirement home for old professors.....

It doesn't provide much for detail. It seems to be public but targeted towards university staff that's retired or who find themselves with an empty nest. You can't discriminate in housing (for example, you're not technically allowed to advertise 'adult-only' buildings, yet they still exist), but you probably don't want to live there anyway, just like I wouldn't want to live on a golf course even if I had the money to do so...

Indeed, my mistake!

I think pierremoncton pretty much answered your questions. My guess, would be the same. Since it's a project in cooperation with UdeM, they'll mainly target that clientel, but I'm sure they won't discriminate against anyone interested.

The Co-op grocery store on Mapleton Road may be in trouble.

It is a corporate store, and Sobey's is apparently uninterested in taking it over. As such, it very well may close (unless they can find another buyer).

This likely should be in the retail section.

Either way, this plaza is in trouble. Dollaramma, Thrift Store and Global Gym and a bunch of vacant space is not a great model.
