21st and Blake

I was just looking at the captures this morning and I noticed the strange building at 21st and Blake (next to Broadstone Blake St). It seems to have no roof or innards. Does anyone know the story behind this.

Where it all began

Sorry, just one more, I couldn't leave out the project that arguably started the wonderfulness that is the LoDo redevelopment.

(By the way, excuse the HDR; I am not a fan of it but it was hard to light Coors Field as the sun was so low in the sky)

It used to be full of power transformers, iirc. Now it is full of sadness and blight.

Great pictures!

Ugh that lot across from Coors Field and 1800 Market all stick out like a sore thumb!

That is such a beautiful building, mind you I am a sucker for traditional soft red bricks, especially when they are actually used to support something. May pop a drone over it to investigate. Make a great Apple store. Their architects are on fire at the moment. They are removing the mezzanine floors that cut across the windows in London's Regent St store so making it have much lower sq footage but so much better aesthetically.

Another nice update, lumos. Thanks. I had been wondering how that 2 block long apartment building in Prospect was coming along (Residences at Prospect Park I think it's called). It's good to see it fits in there just right.
Prospect is really turing into a cool little tucked away neighborhood!

I think that Xcel put up that shell in the 1990's to hide an electrical substation. So kudos to Xcel for the best neo-traditional architectual project in LoDo outside of Coors Field.

Not sure what kind of adaptive reuse you could do on the structure since 2/3's of the structure wasn't designed to hold a roof or floors. Maybe an inner structure that is independent and have the existing walls akin to curtain walls?

Anyways, Xcel still owns it and Xcel doesn't seem like the kind of company to divest itself of unneeded property.

Ah, I see. From a distance it looked like an REI type opportunity to preserve a great old building. I will still probably walk over today just for interest. Funny that I have never even noticed it before.

I'm sure theres gotta be someone out there that could come up with some type of adaptive reuse to save the structure....if they really thought it was worth saving, and if they wanted to put the money into it. Otherwise, it could make for a nice full block redevelopment opportunity.

Awesome shot. Would love a "before" and "after" shot, comparing this to 1990 right at the start of redevelopment of central Denver and the Platte Valley. So much has changed.

The steam plant looks pretty bad with all the new construction around it. I think they should hire an artist to do something really funky and amazing to the exterior. Maybe with the transformers gone from that brick structure at 21st and Market someone will finally redevelop the whole 3/4 block in front of Coors Field. I always imagined that building across the street that is currently a Public Storage would make a great attraction like the awesome and unique City Museum in St. Louis. This could be integrated with the redevelopment of the 3/4 block across the street.

I use to walk by that building all the time on my way to capoira class. It has huge doors that are amazing! You can even see them from the picture. It was vacant back then too (08-10). I think it would be prime for lodo's newest mega bar.

I've always thought it was perfect for a brewery or distillery with plenty of open space and access for the storage tanks.

The Source Hotel will be extremely cool. With the enlarged market space for the Source and the Great Divide brewery across the street that stretch of Brighton Blvd will be jumping! They will probably have to put in a crosswalk with a light there. I love what Zeppelin has been doing at Taxi and now at the Source.

Did you see the photo/slide of a room with its roll-up window or the room with an art splashed wall? It's a hoot.
