Those are interesting. The gun one could would be cool from Fort Calgary east edge over Elbow River arching out over the bow.

I don't mind this light piece, at 24m could draw people into the island too. Like to see some of how the surrounding context will be like.

Anybody have renderings of the solar drone piece at NMC?

I saw a model at the EV centre over the weekend. Think this lighting piece will be a draw and really light up the island.

Was over at the food truck festival over the weekend, huge crowds, riverwalk/new bridge was being very well utilized. Island's coming together. That part of EV is really starting to become its own draw. There's supposed to be events on the Riverwalk every weekend all summer. Looking forward to seeing EV evolve every year. Really cutting edge designs/details throughout the neighborhood.

Saw a bunch of construction notice signs too.

And Batisttella has a new project called Ink coming to EV. Units starting under $200k which is a big plus.

Yeah, that'll be the real art. Tying this piece made of multi-head light standards typical of a suburban shopping plaza to the island. I don't think selling it as a copy of an earlier piece of Katrina art that brought fame and fortune would be too popular.

"The competition guidelines outlined the necessity for a sculpture that would be visible at night, in order to encourage people to frequent the site, which in recent decades has witnessed a decline in use."

Sounds like he nailed it.

I wasn't much of a fan of this piece to begin with but knowing that the same artist has essentially done the same thing before really cements my disappointment. At least the Katrina piece makes sense.... it was made from a bunch of lampposts uprooted in Hurricane strength winds and reassembled in a chaotic form.... but how does the same thing relate to a river island in Calgary?? Except for the thought 'I did this once and it got me in the National Gallery of Canada, so why not do it again but bigger and better' I can't see why this is the direction the artist decided to take.

I also don't understand why the CMLC jury decided to choose this. Either they didn't know it's similar to an earlier piece and thought we were getting something unique or they knew it's similar to an earlier piece and were happy that Calgary would get something similar to what is displayed in a national museum. Either way it's a fail in my books.

The jury for CMLC was well aware of his other works, and definitely the one from New Orleans.

Previous to seeing that New Orleans original, I just thought the art project was uninspired. Now I almost find it insulting that a replica with no connection to our city is being installed in such a prominent location. Firstly, the artist couldn't come up with a single new idea to submit. Secondly, the CMLC decided to go with something completely unoriginal and pay some lazy hack money for it.

They need to have a citizen committee or online vote for which art pieces we choose. That is a giant piss off.

The only positive (if you can call it that), is that our art piece will be 24 m high and the original seems to be 12 m high.
