Google Maps Philadelphia Updated

You can take a look at most major Philly projects. Evo is complete. Looks like aerials might be updated to mid-2014. A lot of projects have started prep work like 1919 Market and Dalian on the Park as well as FMC and CITC. Take a look!

So that means that Philadelphia city accounted for just over a third of the defined region's growth.

The Census Bureau added Berks County to our CSA in 2010 so that should be added, however they removed Mercer County from Philly and added it to New York City as well as the Lehigh & Northampton County (Lehigh Valley). Contrary to what most people think in the Philadelphia area but the Lehigh Valley was always its own metro area. It was never included within even Philly's CSA. Now NYC has "swallowed it up" in addition to the eastern Poconos. Additionally for the CSA, Kent County, in DE and Atlantic, Cape May & Cumberland Counties in New Jersey should be added in the CSA.

This Census Bureau crap about the " official size " of a metro area , or CMSA area is just plane nuts . If it continues
to engulf land area .... for what ever reason , then just include everything in South Jersey and everything east of
Harrisburg . Why would Cecil County Maryland be considered part of the Philly Metro area , when it is just as close
to Baltimore as it is to Philly .
So in ( MHO ) and learning about this ( metro area stuff ) from the old school , it's Chester , Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery
county on the Pa. side and Camden , Burlington and Gloucester County in Jersey ...... Anything in Delaware and
certainly anything in Maryland , is stupid , un-necessary , inflated bull shit ...... That's my story , and I'm sticking to it .

Yes, Mercer and Lehigh Valley aren't part of Philly's metro population as of now, but they should be. Definitely not in New York's. It's absolutely ridiculous that Trenton is considered part of New York, coz when I go out of NE Philly I'm down there in no time going up the Boulevard. In fact, depending on traffic, it can take less time to get from NE Philly to Trenton than to get to the airport from there. The line of demarcation definitely needs to be shifted. It's quite a bit out of whack imo.

There's a rationale behind it. Even if you don't agree with it, you ought to at least know what it is.

Maybe that's the definition. But I'm not seeing how Lehigh Valley and Mercer have a higher degree of economic and social integration with New York than Philly. Add the fact that they are physically closer to Philly, and it makes you scratch your head. I understand why Mercer County is part of the Trenton statistical area. But it makes no sense that it is also considered part of the New York metropolitan area by the census. (Best basis I can see is that the Yankee's AA team is based there)

Anyhow, good to see the Philly metro area (however appropriately or poorly defined) is growing.

Yea real bummer. A very close and trust-worthy friend of mine told me that Comcast has sent a memo to all auditing/accounting/financial reporting staff hired within the past 2 weeks advising them to begin looking for another job. They do not plan on layoffs for now, as they hope voluntary attrition will suffice.

This doesn't mean Comcast will have net layoffs of course, as many employees will soon be joining the Comcast II building. But it is clear they over-hired for the unanticipated merger fail.

I can definitely see how Mercer County is tied in more with New York over Philly. Granted, only a very small faction of people actually travel to either city for work but I just got done working in New Brunswick for 7 months and it is pretty obvious that more people travel North for work as opposed to South in the Mercer County area.

That's silly. Lots of people in New Castle County commute to Delco, Chester County, and Philly--and vice versa! People in Northern Delaware very much consider themselves a part of the Philly area. They eat hoagies, root for the Phils, and get their weather from Hurricane Schwartz.

So , because I like cray fish and blue claw crabs , does that mean I can
consider myself part of Baltimore's metro area ?

That part was just me being facetious. The fact of the matter is that the Census Bureau has a definition of MSA based on data, and Delaware is very much a part of our MSA. Your feelings on the matter are only based on your own anecdotal experience, not on real data.

Well , I'm sure glad my feelings were based on something

That may be true, but I worked in Mercer County for 10 years and 40% of my office commuted from PA (Bucks, Philadelphia, Montgomery), and another 40% commuted from South Jersey (Burlington County, Ocean County (the Jackson area), Camden County). A very very small portion of the populace actually lived in Mercer or points north, because of the cost of living.

So, it makes sense to me that if you were commuting to points north, you would say, more likely live in Mercer than Middlesex or Bergen County, but in terms of the people who work in those offices on the Rt 1 corridor in Mercer County, a profound number of them commute from points South.

All you have to do to understand that is drive South on Rt 1 during rush hour and compare it to the northbound traffic. It's a feast and famine situation (gridlock versus free flow). Ditto for 95 South into PA from NJ in the PM rush and 95 North across the Scudders Falls during the AM rush. Ditto for RT 1 into Trenton as well.

The people who live in Mercer may commute to points north, certainly more than they commute to points south (there is no reason to), but the people who work there undoubtedly commute from the SB direction if they have a choice (i.e. no spouse that works further north).
