Bad idea to toll non-Toronto residents to use the Gardiner. While a lot of the Gardiner's traffic does originate from neighbouring municipalities and visitors (such as me, who used the expressway today), I don't see tolls as a solution. Tolls, I think, will lead to more traffic on Lake Shore Blvd and on other surface streets such as Queen, Richmond/Adelaide, and even Bloor.

I think a better solution is getting the province involved and uploading at least part of the Gardiner so that the cost of an expressway used heavily by non-Toronto residents is funded by non-Toronto residents as well as Toronto residents. The Gardiner west of the Humber River was part of the QEW until 1997, and correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the rest of the Gardiner an MTO Connecting Link as part of Highway 2 prior to then as well?

This exact issue came up in Ottawa several years ago with another former provincial highway, Ottawa Road 174 (formerly Hwy 17), which is within Ottawa but gets a lot of commuter traffic from Clarence-Rockland and other neighbouring municipalities. In that case both the ideas of non-resident tolls and pressing Queen's Park to take back the highway came up.

I always thought that Shanghai's solution to peak hour congestion was a good one - no non-Shanghai plated cars are allowed on the elevated highways during peak hours. Unfortunately I suppose there's no way to do something similar in Toronto, unless Ontario license plates had some kind of coding to indicate that they were from Toronto.

Unless the tolling authority had access to the registries database. The licence plate holder's vehicle is registered to the home address, so they could probably determine the city of origin for the vehicle.

Toronto's a big city. Big cities have shitty traffic, it's just part of life. The majority of people taking the Gardiner everyday have alternative ways to get to work, they just choose not to use them.

Ontario's licence plate serials actually are sorted by district, it's just not in a logical order. CADL might be in Haldimand while CADM is in Rainy River and CADN is in Essex. I don't think anyone has ever figured out the order. I think they just box the plates and ship them out so all of one serial goes to one place and all of another goes somewhere else, etc., with no real logical order to it.

But there definitely are serials that only got assigned in Toronto to cars registered in and around Toronto.

The City of Hamilton has been installing a lot of cameras lately, think it's about $5 million or so. Apparently they want it up and running before the Pan Am Games. Someone from the traffic department will be able to monitor the traffic and adjust the traffic lights to minimize the congestion.

I personally think we should have all traffic lights computer-controlled by an AI program that would use a machine-learning algorithm and game theory to fine-tune each traffic light for optimal traffic flow. Such a system could automatically learn to have different signal timings at different times of the day, as well as directly respond to temporary changes in traffic pattern brought about by accidents or special events, without any need for human input.

Such a thing is both possible and practical with today's AI technology.

I was born and raised in London. In London Goderich is considered up north and Barrie was considered the edge of the planet.

Before I left the GTA last year I always considered Barrie as the starting point of Northern Ontario. Then I drove across Canada. After it took me 2 days to get out of Ontario I now realize that Barrie is pretty fucking south.

Northern Ontario begins at the French River along Hwy 69 and just South of North Bay along Hwy 11.
