I don't think it will make a huge impact on retailers above ground. Seems these will only be short tunnels for entrances, no retailers (other than existing ones in PdV tunnels).

I'm curious to see how this will be done with the Claridge entrance considering we don't even have an official proposal yet, other than 5+ year old renderings. Don't see the complex being proposed, approved and opened (ground floor at least) by 2018.

I have similar concerns with PdV; what happens to the entrance if/when/while the Podium is re-developed? Will the 80s mall be updated during the 3 years remaining before the O-train opens?

The Confederation Line will have cell phone reception both in the underground stations and on the trains in the tunnels:

This will be the first in Canada. Neither Toronto or Montreal have wireless service in their subway/metro systems.

Geez, you get good news like that, and then all the comments are focused on how the stations won't have wifi. Do people really not have data plans in this day and age?

We have the most expensive mobile phone plan/data rates in the world, so many people do NOT have data plans on their phones to save $ and actively search for wifi wherever they are. I have a data plan, but many of my friends don't, and my parents don't either.

I agree with the comments. Just look across the river, Rapibus has free wifi at stations and on board its Rapibus extended buses. So why not the Confed Line? I think it will happen and will be announced in a year or two as well.

What a waste. No need for cell coverage in the underground, not like someone will be there for long anyways.

Probably. Once you have the telecom infrastructure in place for cellular, WiFi isn't much more.

This is actually very revolutionary. Very few underground transit systems have cellular service. Toronto doesn't. Montreal doesn't. New York doesn't. London doesn't.

This is actually a benefit of building our subway in the 2010s rather than in the past. By building it now, we can incorporate all these modern principles--cellular service, full wheelchair accessibility, etc.--right into the original designs. Whereas other cities have to retrofit these in at great expense. Toronto is spending a fortune on making its stations wheelchair accessible.

Are you kidding? I don't know a single person who won't spontaneously combust if they're forced to go more than 90 seconds without checking their phone

Well, compared with Montreal and Toronto, where the entirety of their lines are underground, Ottawa will have you underground for what 10mins max if youre just passing through and 15mins max if you get off at Parliament station (walking time included)? Would be nice if the line was buried, but its not, so its really a waste. If that were to change, say creating a subway down bank, it would be more logical.

Someone riding across town could easily be in the tunnel portion for 4-5 minutes. Not to mention that a big chunk of Phase 2's western extension is now going to be underground as well.

Someone who's reading the news or something on the train would be a little annoyed at a 4-5 minute dark zone.

In Toronto where the underground lines have no reception, at points where the train surfaces for the first time in a while (like for example the brief surfacing near Rosedale along the Yonge line) half the train gets out their phones.

I get service in the Montréal Metro; and if London doesn't, why do they keep saying "make it on par with London"? Either way, I don't see why this requires taxpayer financing for the telecoms to provide service to tens of thousands of their customers each day.

Montreal does? That's quite new, then. Good to hear

London has service at some of the stations but not in the tunnels. At least, they didn't when I was there in February 2013.

The telecoms will probably pay for the ongoing operating costs. Getting them to pay the $1M capital expense would be awesome (and for all we know, the city may actually do that), but I'm not too fussed if they aren't. $1M is a very marginal cost for when you consider the billions invested in the project, and how good of a convenience boost it is.

We are now living in the 21st century. Cell phone coverage in our subway system is a must. We want to make using transit as attractive as possible. If you need your cellphone in order to conduct business, you don't want your calls interrupted because you enter the downtown tunnel.

And this is coming from someone who still doesn't have a smart phone.

Makes sense. but this isn't a new thing, I lived in MTL a decade ago and could use my old Nokia brickomophone in the Metro.

I have a CAT B15 smartphone. It's basically immortal. I clean off dust marks by washing it in the sink. I need it as I'm extraordinarily clumsy.

Yes, if the telecom companies do it of their own volition, to increase customer satisfaction thats great. But if the city installs the service for telecom companies to provide their services, I will be very dissappointed (not surprised though).

Learn something new everyday! Today, I learned that CAT makes smartphones. Impressive! Where did you buy it?

On a sidenote, how come none of the visuals of the Confederation Lines show the overhead electrical wires, or will the trains get power from the rail?
