Walmart is buying 13 of the former Target Canada stores, along with a distribution centre in Cornwall, Ont.

Walmart Canada says it will spend about $165 million for the leases and properties and a further $185 million on renovations.

The $350-million plan is subject to court approval, as part of Target's exit from the Canadian market.

Walmart expects renovations to start in a few months and to employ about 1,500 trade and construction workers.

It also plans to hire about 2,400 people to set up and staff the stores and another 1,000 for the distribution centre.

One of the stores is in Winnipeg and the others are in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

Here is a list of the locations involved:

A Walmart in Bayshore... cannot say I saw that coming.

Yes 3 in Ottawa and 1 in Gatineau... I am getting the feeling the Gatineau one may become a Loblaw property at some point.

A Walmart in Bayshore Community makes sense as they don't have a lot of other full grocery stores and the Lincoln Fields Walmart is not a supercentre.
But a Walmart in Bayshore S.C. is going to be so weird... Seeing a giant Walmart blue wall as you approach from Richmond and the 417.

You thought parking was bad now....

Edit: forgot to mention I love the idea of a Walmart in Billings Bridge. The one at South Keys is often very busy from the times I've been there.

That's good news for the Bayshore community. That area has long been in need of a grocery store and Walmart will provide that. It's good news for the Shopping Centre as well to have a tenant in that space.

To become a Loblaws store? It's true that this part of Gatineau doesn't have one but there is a ton of supermarkets in this area, including two Maxi stores within about 1 km of each other (Maxi is owned by Loblaws-Provigo).

So Bayshore is flipping Liberal to Conservative. lol.

But it will be interesting to see how and what they offer in that space. I dont think it is large enough for a supercentre, but parhaps offering what Lincoln Fields doesnt?

Ex-Target stores at Bayshore, Billings Bridge among those picked up by Wal-mart

The Ottawa Citizen
Published on: May 8, 2015, Last Updated: May 8, 2015 8:46 AM EDT

The former Target stores at Bayshore and Billings Bridge shopping centres are among the 13 properties to be taken over by Wal-Mart Canada, Wal-Mart announced Friday.

The company said it plans to invest some $350 million in the deal, including about $185 million to renovate the 12 leased stores, one company owned property and one distribution centre.

Wal-Mart says it plans to hire approximately 3,400 new associates in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec and these projects are expected to generate approximately 1,500 trade and construction jobs.

Work on all locations is expected to start within the next few months subject to court approval under Target Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act proceedings and certain other customary conditions.

“Walmart is committed to the Canadian market, and this agreement helps us accelerate our growth plans ensuring more Canadians have access to our low prices,” said Dirk Van den Berghe, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Canada. He described the Target properties as all “well-situated.”

There is a Super C right next to the Maxi, same mall as the Walmart. Can;t see it becoming a Loblaws as stated by Acajack, the Maxi is owned by Loblaws.

There are definitely a lot of grocery stores in this area, but Super C and Maxi are low-cost.

Loblaws would be a more high-end option.

Remember this from when Smartcentres was developing the Laurention High School property?

Wonder how many years the deal was for... with the Western LRT coming and two new Supercentres close by I think Lincoln Fields days are numbered and we will see a major redevelopment proposal soon.

The St. Laurent Blvd. location would be pretty well-located for this type of conversion, if it were to happen, though I'm not sure where they'd put a lumber yard.

Lowe's gets 13 Target Canada stores, Milton distribution centre for $151 million

The Canadian Press ~ OBJ
Published on May 11, 2015

The Lowe's home improvement chain has a deal to buy 13 former Target Canada locations and a distribution centre west of Toronto for about $151 million.

Lowe's Canada did not reveal specific locations, but says the stores are across Canada in area where the retailer is "underpenetrated." The distribution centre is in Milton, Ont.

It said about 2,000 jobs will be created by the transaction but didn't disclose details.

Lowe's is the latest major retailer to acquire pieces of Target's former 133-store Canadian retail network through a court-supervised auction, following Canadian Tire (TSX:CTC.A) and Walmart Canada.

Minneapolis-based Target Corp. announced in January that it would pull out of Canada, barely two years after entering the market to much fanfare, saying it didn't expect the operation could be profitable for several years.

Lumber is inside at Lowes (actually most home centres these days). It is more garden centre that is outside.

A Lowes' store there would be fabulous! Finally a home centre close-ish to downtown.

Would love to see Lowes make a statement in QC!

Unlikely of course, but that would be great for Gatineau. We drive to the one on Hunt Club; like the selection of products and pricing.

Meh, from a CBC article: "These additional locations will accelerate our expansion across the country, enhancing our presence in Western Canada and strengthening our base in Ontario,"

It almost has to be because Hazeldean and Orleans are in malls and wouldn't work. Merivale is too close to their Hunt Club Lowe's. And the other two Targets have been scooped up by Walmart. If it is the St Laurent location, it will be interesting to see where they put their Garden Centre because there is an attached Metro and limited room between the store and the Food Basics on the other side. (Unless Metro is vacating that store and Lowe's can use it).

The former Target spot on Maloney Blvd (if they meant the entire NCR region) would be way too small for a Lowes

Lowe’s inks deal to buy 13 Target Canada stores and an Ontario distribution centre for $151-million

Ross Marowits
The Canadian Press | May 11, 2015 3:17 PM ET

The Lowe’s home improvement chain has become the latest big-box retailer to expand its presence in Canada by buying up leases of former Target store locations across the country.

Lowe’s announced Monday that it is building its presence in Ontario and six Western Canadian cities after reaching a deal to buy 13 Target Canada leases and a distribution centre west of Toronto for about $151 million.

Almost half of the locations are in Ontario — Thunder Bay, Milton, North York, Ottawa, Toronto and Burlington, says a court filing on Target’s windup.

The chain is also adding four stores in Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George and Abbotsford, B.C., along with two locations in Calgary and store in Regina.

Lowe’s Canada says about 2,000 jobs will be created at the stores and the distribution centre in Milton. However, it declined to provide details.

“These additional locations will accelerate our expansion across the country, enhancing our presence in Western Canada and strengthening our base in Ontario,” Lowe’s Canada president Sylvain Prud’homme said.

RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust is owner of eight properties, while the rest are spread among four different owners.

The court filing says Target Canada will receive $26.5 million, which its financial adviser said is likely more than it would have received had the locations been sold individually at auction.

“In the circumstances, an en bloc transaction is expected to maximize the collective value of these assets,” said the court document.

Under terms of the agreement, Lowe’s has to convince other retailers to waive their rights to prohibit or restrict Lowe’s operations at the various locations. Otherwise, such locations will be removed from the deal and the overall value lowered.

Lowe’s originally submitted a bid last month for 17 locations, but the list was whittled down after Target’s financial adviser determined it could attract higher proceeds by eliminating four unidentified stores.

The agreement is subject to Ontario court approval and is expected to close by June 30.

Lowe’s is the latest major retailer to acquire pieces of Target’s former 133-store Canadian retail network through a court-supervised auction, following Canadian Tire and Walmart Canada.

Canadian Tire has announced it will acquire 12 leases for $17.7 million. Wal-Mart will spend $165 million to acquire 13 stores and a distribution centre, while spending an additional $185 million on renovations.

The deals leave 95 Target locations unclaimed thus far. Potential bidders include Loblaw, Metro, Rona and Home Depot, according to analyst Irene Nattel of RBC Capital Markets.

Minneapolis-based Target Corp. announced in January that it would pull out of Canada, barely two years after entering the market to much fanfare, saying it didn’t expect the operation could be profitable for several years.

Since arriving in Canada in late 2007, Lowe’s has opened 38 stores in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, with more than 6,000 employees.
