assuming this construction guy is average height, it goes up to your head! i would feel like i'm in a fishbowl. these are the condos floors not the hotel.

Considering that the Shangri la next door doesn't have any balconies I guess it's a small mercy that should be grateful for (given the apparent concern for safety)!

You have seen the renders a hundred times, haven't you? They still have to construct the screens/fins that cover the mechanical penthouse.

I didn't think it was safety. I put higher glass up on my railings as it provides greater wind protection. Especially at those heights I would prefer taller railings

....and I can just imagine how frigidly cold those winds can be in Vancouver as an impetus to hide behind higher glass railings on high rise buildings!

You're being sarcastic lol? It's not that it's cold it's that up high it can be friggin blustery. Or for me being right by the water it can be really gusty. It's really nice having some of that blocked

Osirisboy, I really wasn't trying to be sarcastic but am rather serious about the low temperature of these winds being uncomfortable, especially at the higher building elevations. Maybe that's why the Shangri la next door wasn't built with balconies.

Shangri-La has lots of balconies on the west side and they are open.

Less balconies make a glass building look sleeker. The Trump will be an ugly mess with too many balconies sticking out here and there. Higher glass railings on those balconies not only provide safety and block extreme winds, but also help streamline this building to the desired effect.

Very true. Now go tell that to the Burrard Gateway developers.

I'm not familiar with the detailed weather patterns of Vancouver in terms of the general direction(s) of that city's wind flows so I wonder if the west side of the Shangri la has less (cold) wind that the other sides?

Here and there? Balconies on Trump are in a very consistent pattern. It's some other buildings in this city that have their balconies all over the building. Trump is a sleek tower.

Having lived 3 years on the 45th floor in Downtown Vancouver, I can say that most of the time the strong winds are from west. Why Shangri-La has all the balconies on west side is because of the view of English Bay. Wind direction has nothing to do with it.

I can also tell you guys that it is windy on those heights only occasionally. Yes, the storms can be pretty strong, but that is only few days a year. Most of the time it is nice and calm up there and having a balcony would be fantastic.

Also, the NW and NE corners of Shangri-La has semi-open balconies; glazing on half and railing on the other half.

Klazu, thanks for your insight. Do you feel the winds are colder coming off the mountains versus coming off the ocean (with the supposedly warmer Pacific current)?

There is no mountain wind - they block the wind. It's almost exclusively from the west downtown. We're in a steep V-shaped valley facing the coast.

Thanks Pinon for your info. In that case the building's "aspect" then dictates that northern sides will be cooler than the southern (and also in this case, western) side from which direction the Pacific's warming Japan air current hits.

Is this guy standing up or kneeling on one knee?
The ceiling heights are supposed to 8'6" aren't they?

Three years has passed and Shangri-La is not alone anymore. The photos don't align perfectly as I happened to take them from different room (silly me). My apologies for that.

Sorry. What I meant was, Trump would have been a mess with balconies sticking out here and there. Of course the Trump is really sleek.
