Nice! The street level doesn't look too inviting, but what's above it looks good.

That's along what is essentially sunken "highway" on Maisonneuve. The main entrance on Victoria Street, across from the 30 Victoria government building (u/c on the right in first pic, on the left in second pic)looks decent.

Ah, well then I rescind my comment. It looks good. It's not quite mixed-use, but doesn't look bad.

That said, they're still building disturbing things that are erasing the character and spirit of Old Hull's streets. The building across the street, 30 Victoria is case in point — its frontage on Kent street is a stark and sterile contrast to the old houses that pretty well exposed its residents' lives on the street à la "Balconville".

Office towers in Hull, and even condo buildings, although not horrible (and in the case of 41 Victoria, quite nice aesthetically) they have long ways to go before perfecting proper street level interaction. In Ottawa, I think we've been doing fairly well looking at the 180 Kent, the EDC as well as 90 and 150 Elgin. Although we still have a few condo towers like Claridge Plaza x 4 that despite street level retail, still have dismal looking street interaction.

Quick comment on Harley's post showing steel structures/scaffolding at the base of Terraces de la Chaudière, it might be there to protect people from falling bricks. I don't have any sort f proof It's just theory.

I noticed yesterday that there was a Popeye Louisiana Chicken opening up at the former Herongate mall (new power centre), the windows were plastered with the restaurant logo.

Not trying to say anything... but given the demographic of the area, seems like a good place to jump into the Ottawa market.

It's perhaps true in some places but in this case what that replaced was an ugly gravel surface parking lot with rusting yellow posts and weeds.

Better than I expected. I did not know this building would have an entrance on Maisonneuve.

Ugh. Two more war-related memorials for 2017. It's like the Sesquicentennial will be about war. Last time I read my history, we didn't need a war to make Confederation happen.

I really don't get who they're catering to with all these monuments.

And good point about Confederation not being about war. It's like they're trying to re-write our history of negotiation and treaty to one of a war culture. So fucked up.

literally many thousands of voters, maybe even into the millions who like to see a government that's spends a lot of time talking about "tough" things like the military (as well as criminals, terrorists, condemning certain specific ugly regimes/practices overseas, etc.)

They've pissed off veterans, so if they think some memorials will change that they're delusional. Appeal to this small sub-section of voters who are easily manipulated. They're trying to glamourize war to convince more people to join the army and support this government's attempts at getting involved in more wars. Notice how frequent the "Join the Canadian Forces" commercials are? Or how they and the media like to use the War Memorial shootings as pro-war propaganda (to make people fear ISIS)? It's very American what they're trying to do.

Sadly, it's already working. I asked my mother about the next Federal election and she's supporting Harper because she thinks only he is a capable enough lead us in light of ISIS. I don't know how I'm related to her....

Curious to know how old your mother is, and if she's a member of the CFRA nation?

She'll be 63 in October. She's not a dedicated listener but I have caught her once or twice listening in. She admits to reading the Ottawa Sun a couple times a week, but mostly it's just the Ottawa Citizen, CBC and CTV (which is partnered with CFRA and have a more right-wing angle). As she's gotten older I've noticed her supporting the Conservatives (provincial and federal). She's not the most well-read or intellectual, I'll admit.

I really hope the Afghan War memorial is a giant puzzle that you can try and solve. And its on quicksand. And the more you try the more it pulls you in. And also you can't solve it until the government uncovers the root cause of what went wrong.

Edit: Just a quiet reflection for Canadians
