I'm glad to see some new height in Hull, but doesn't 55 storeys, especially right in front of the treasured Museum of Civ (History?!) seem a little high?

In a way it's true.. I think 5 x (15-23 story) towers might have been a better fit (and fill) in downtown hull/gatineau than 1 55 story and 1 35 story tower. Oh well...

I think it's funny though how in most of downtown and central Ottawa there are very strict height limits and such because of peace tower, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this which directly across the river from parliament... Does anyone know if you were to stand on the "great lawn" at Parliament if you would be able to see this 55 story tower would peak behind the parliament? Maybe someone could sketch up a rough draft? I'd be intereted to see...

Are there any height limits on the Gatineau side? I'm rather surprised there aren't.

I think I heard something about an NCC imposed limit on land directly across from the Museum a few years back, but I can't confirm.

If it were up to me, zoning along Laurier east of Maisonneuve would be limited to 20-25 floors and the area bounded by Maisonneuve/Portage Bridge, Laurier, Wright and Montcalm (excluding what should be a heritage protected Vieux hull district) should be 40-50 floors.

Along Montcalm, 30 floors, gradually reducing to 5 floors near the BDT.

According to my calculation you could see the tip of the hotel when standing near wellington, 55 story = 200m?

This would be the building with the most floors for all the province of Quebec. Might give a run at 1000 Gauchetiere for tallest in Quebec?

There used to be at the very least. The NCC shot down a similar project in the 90s.

Totally out of place and I doubt this will happen or at least won`t be built at 65 stories. I expect it will end up more as 3 X 20 stories or so.

I am surprised that no one has made the comparison of Brigil to Claridge here! Has anyone here ever purchased a new, or recently built condo on the Quebec side? Are you aware of the various builders and their reputations in Gatineau? I bought a brand new Junic condo a few years ago, and opted for Junic over Brigil precisely due to the quality of build/workmanship and quality of basic materials used (inside and exterior). I have sold that Junic condo since, but I loved it when I was living in it. I also visited quite a few Brigil condos and houses and was always put off by the budget quality of what I saw. Not to mention the plain designs, similar to Claridge. I even met quite a few contractors and they all dislike Brigil because Brigil goes for the cheapest & lowest quality possible and doesn't treat their contractors well either. Its clear in my mind that Brigil in QC = Claridge in Ottawa. So a saying like its Brigil not Claridge, is a fallacy actually. Because the two are in fact quite similar. Unless of course they will bring their A game to these towers. Is Claridge bringing their A game to the Icon?
How fitting that the two worst builders in Ottawa are going to be fighting for the tallest building in the region (Did Claridge apply for a height increase to the Icon following Richcraft's announcement for a tallest on the Dow Honda site?)

I've always known Brigile builds cheap when it comes to houses, townhomes and low-rise condos, but I find their high-rise designs quite nice compared to the bland Claridge towers. Of course, exterior design doesn't speak for overall quality.

Fact is, Claridge is the #1 builder in Ottawa in terms of units and the same goes for Brigile in Gatineau (with a few on the go in Ottawa).

There has been no mention of a high increase or proposal for one at Icon and I don't see that happening; hard enough to sell all units of a 45 storey building without adding 10-15 floors.

Well, looking at the concept drawings for the Icon it looks like it will be Clairidges A game (to me at least), so I would assume that Brigil will do the same. Kind of a cross border competition like used to happen between Buda and Pest.

Signature towers could revitalize the downtown Gatineau
Updated 58 minutes ago
Nathalie Tremblay - Radio Canada

The contractor Gatineau Brigil unveiled this afternoon, the models of its major residential project that would be located across from the Canadian Museum of history. The proposal had been expected for more than two years .

Two residential towers of 35 and 55 floors will be built outside the museum as well, or at 61 and at 77 Laurier. They each include a commercial, hotel, residential areas and a spa or restaurant.

The proposal also includes a public plaza and pedestrian connections, including to the square of the town hall.

The project, whose cost would exceed $ 400 million, was presented to the City of Gatineau. It would be entirely privately funded.

With this project, Brigil wishes to respond to the development vision of the City of Gatineau, revitalizing this sector "projects signatures with an avant-garde architecture to marry heritage and modernity ".

The president of Brigil Gilles Desjardins, wants to inform residents about the project and share its vision.

"It has always been expected of projects of this quality in Gatineau that will grow, which will also make an excellent image for our region. It's like in Paris. Tomorrow morning, do not remove the Eiffel Tower in Paris, people are proud of their Eiffel Tower. We, it is estimated that it should happen with these buildings there, "he argued.

These towers would also contribute to revitalizing downtown, building on a high population density. The City of Gatineau has set itself the goal of attracting 10,000 new residents between 2005 and 2020.

Divided elected

The Ward Councillor and Mayor of Gatineau see the project differently.

Councillor Denise Laferrière The expressed support for the installation of two towers even if it considers it necessary to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the project. "It is the fourth largest city in Quebec. We must begin to show, one must not think in terms of `` good, I am small, I am là.`` It must have the means of our ambitions, "she pleads.

For his part, Mayor Maxime Pedneaud Jobin is cautious. He argues that this is a major project that deserves to take time to analyze it. "This is a project that will change the face of Gatineau for 75 years, a century is for the future, this is not nothing. Me, before packing, I think it is wiser to look at the project itself, to see its latest version, to have the opinion of municipal services, "he says.

Responding to residents' concerns

Moreover, Brigil conducted a sun study to address concerns raised by residents. Some fear that the high towers hide the sun significantly for the area.

According to the 3D models presented, the shadows cast by the towers are quite significant at the winter solstice (December), but fine at the spring equinox (March) and the summer solstice (June).
