Maybe im wrong but all signs point to this being just as bad as the rogers centre deal for the Argos
It won't be as bad because scheduling will be 1000% better at BMO, and the cavernous atmosphere will be gone.

Whether end zones are field turf is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It really makes little difference to the game.

I don't see how anyone can write this off as a disaster unless we see drawings to know exactly where the field will be positioned. And there is no way that a field that is 10 yards off centre (assuming that is even the case) will be as much of a headache as the Barclays Centre arrangement for the Islanders where nearly 1/3 of the arena's seats will be unusable for hockey.

Well, there is this article hot off the press from the Sun which offers some insight even though it doesn't fully answer the off-centre field question:

Quote:
While the soccer pitch at BMO Field will remain grass, CFL games – assuming the deal goes through – will feature an all-turf end zone at the north end of the stadium while the south end zone could be half-turf. Not exactly ideal, but a similar adaptation exist in Oakland, where the NFL's Raiders play on a baseball diamond.

...

“For CFL (action), we'll have to go all the way back to the scoreboard to create an end zone,” Leiweke explained.

As a result, the seats at the north end of the stadium (near the Gardiner Expressway) would disappear. Those 800 seats would be replaced by a retractable, multi-layered terrace soccer fans will utilize on game days.

The multi-deck terrace would cover the north CFL end zone during soccer games before being rolled back for football.
I don't see what the fuss is about. Rogers Centre and the Ex weren't perfect for football, and BMO won't be either. But if a slightly off centre field and field turf endzones are the worst things you can say about it, then that's not really a huge deal.

This was back in the mid 1990's in Memphis

Although turf has come a long long ways since then.

Memphis was by far the worst example of a CFL field in the US... the CFL really had no business being in the Liberty Bowl. Most others were regulation size or just slightly off by a bit.

And yes, the turf is completely different now... there wouldn't be a huge glaring difference like there was with the earlier generations.

Argonauts still an afterthought at BMO Field
By KURTIS LARSON, TORONTO SUN, Leader-Post May 7, 2015 2:49 PM

The Toronto Argonauts aren't a priority at BMO Field.

They're an afterthought, apparently.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment's top boss Tim Leiweke reiterated that this week when he insinuated the embattled CFL club is fairly far down on the BMO Field priority list – a distant fourth behind the company's Major League Soccer franchise.

The proof? The bizarre, uh, design flaws the CFL team could face are an indication of the Argos' place in the pecking order.

Still, there's no hiding the fact that MLSE's CEO means business when he says this country's national stadium is, well, just that: A soccer stadium.

“At the end of the day, it's first, TFC. Second, TFC. Third, TFC,” MLSE CEO Tim Leiweke told the Toronto Sun during a tour of Toronto's downtown soccer-specific venue. “If you go to a TFC game, you won't notice a setup different than this.”

Especially if certain deadlines aren't met over the next few weeks.

Accompanied Wednesday by Bob Hunter, MLSE's Chief Project Development Officer, Leiweke reiterated the need for a resolution to the will-they, won't-they Argos situation in the coming weeks if the CFL side is to play at BMO Field in 2016.

“It's an immediate issue,” Leiweke added. “For (our construction company) to do Phase 2 they need to know in the next week or two where they're headed. If we're doing a Phase 2, the entire area up to the scoreboard disappears next year. We'll put in a party plaza there.”

As far as Toronto FC is concerned, Phase 2 is already underway in the bowels of BMO Field, where machinery is currently digging colossal holes that will hold columns leading up to the to-be-installed stadium roof.

For football, though, an entirely different process would need to begin come winter, when MLS takes a break.

“That's the misnomer that's out there,” Leiweke said. “You won't see end zone markings during soccer games. All of our portables come out and cover it at both ends. Those end zones would be field turf. They'll have logos on them. During a TFC game, you aren't going to see that.

“There will be no logos anywhere on this field ever. If they want logos, they're going to have to work with the field turf in each of the end zones.”

Nonetheless, the Argos – and their fans – view a potential move to BMO as a positive despite the fact CFL venues in places like Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver are approaching world class. Anything is better than another season at Rogers Centre, even if the Argos remain secondary tenants.

“We understand the pressure from the province and from the city that everyone wishes we can solve the (Argos) problem,” Leiweke said. “We get that and we want to play a role if that's what happens.”

The keyword in Leiweke's aforementioned phrase? Problem.

And that's why the Argos are pretty far down on MLSE's depth chart.

So bmo field is 115 yards long. a CFL field is 110 plus minus the endzones. So if MLSE wanted to do this right here would be the way to do it. leave the Entire playing surface grass. have 2.5 yards of endzone grass and the rest of the Endzone turf but paint it black with an Argos logo on each side. Looks even and you wont even be able to tell its 2 different surfaces

Actually now that I think about it an MLS and FIFA both deem 110 yards acceptable for Soccer So if you shrink the MLS pitch 5 yards you can potentially make it work with both endzones being turf

With properly painted endzones it wouldn't even matter that there weren't any logos on the field itself. There would be Argonauts logos in each end zone telling you exactly which team you're seeing in the stadium.

If anything this is positive for the Argo fan experience given that CFL fields are festooned with way too many ugly sponsor logos, although obviously this could hurt the team in the pocketbook.

I guess more the point im getting to is that its not gonna look very ascetically pleasing to have 2 different shades of green so if you paint the end zone black and shrink the MLS field 5 yards that space would now become CFL ground which would become turf. That way you have a full grass MLS pitch with full 20 yard turf end zones

It was mentioned that TSN would add the logos digitally so the viewers at home would still see them - thus keeping advertisers happy.

Ok so I crunched the numbers and figured this out for MLSE. (you're welcome). All they have to do is shrink the pitch 5 yards from 115 to 110 and move the entire pitch over 5 yards to the north (hardly noticeable) which would gain you 10 yards and then you would get the remaining 10 yards needed from retractable seating on the south end. Which would result in a 110 yard grass MLS pitch and 110 yards of grass for a CFL playing surface with 20 yard turf endzones. The only downside is the 110 yard pitch would be offset 5 yards north for TFC and CFL games which really isn't a big deal since the north and south end seating arrangements can be adjusted. I'm sure even the Red Patch boys would be okay with this small change. I know I know! I'm a genius don't flatter me

I don't know if that has ever been confirmed. As an old TV guy I postulated the idea a long time ago but I don't think there has ever been a commitment to it. If there was, I'd like to see all on field logos disappear and they could charge sponsors rates where even a smaller company could get some coverage.

Also with sideline video boards is there really a need to put corporate logos on the field, to me they just don't add to a nice clean look.

Difference could be that the teams/stadium owners get the profits from on-field add when they are physically there, but TSN would reap the benefits if they are digitally added later? Unless TSN signs some sort of agreement with each team/stadium.

The more time has gone by the more I love THF. I mean yes IGF and Mosiac are special but their is truly something to be said about simplicity when building these stadiums. TD Place is also beautiful and I'm sure one day they will tear down the north side and do something really special with the Stadium but man has THF grown on me in ways that no stadium in this league has up to today. I really think they got the bang for buck Stadium is their any price tag on what TD place cost to build/renovate?

I looked at this soccer columnist's twitter feed... he just keeps repeating "CFL IS AN AFTERTHOUGHT AT BMO" like a mantra, hoping it will go away.

I am actually looking forward to the Argos moving in there out of sheer spite for guys like this. When the Argos park at BMO for a few years, it won't matter if the seats are red or the soap dispensers have TFC stickers on them. Football fans just don't give a crap about that stuff.

Lol. I was a member there since 2008 as well as a season ticket holder and got banned a couple weeks ago because they wouldnt allow a tfc fan to also be a cfl fan. Dont take it personally, their mods force you to conform to their views or you get banned. If you dont hate the cfl and express the cfl in a non negative way you get banned. No deviation from the views of the elite mods are allowed for fear that neutural observes will come on their forum and think "some soccer fans wont mind the argos at bmo"

They really give the rest of the tfc fans a bad rep. And thats unforunate because Not all are like that. But If you're a CFL and soccer fan and join that forum you have zero chance of not getting banned.

No surprise. I don't think any group of sports fans in Canada has a chip on their shoulder like the red patchers. The insecurity is strong over there.
