I went by there yesterday and there were still cars parked in the lot and no fencing up. I've seen Hensel Phelps workers around there though doing surveying and the utilities are all marked, and they have their excavation and shoring permits.

If you're interested in seeing another tower crane go up the one at 245 Columbine is getting installed today and Sunday.

And there is only one thing better than a crane going up, and that's one coming down. Pretty sure 1601 Wewatta comes down today.

Do we know what the final design for this project looks like? I remember on DI that the Developer said that the Humphries Polis design was old..

1144 is supposed to break ground in May, not specifically on May 1.

Do we know which design for the base of the tower was settled on? We've seen a few different versions.

I heard from a credible source today that there is a strong possibility of a ~12 storey Westin going above the Safeway in Cherry Creek after the lease ends this year. Safeway has also expressed its desire to remain on the ground level and will likely do so.

There were rumors floating around about hotel at the mall. Be interesting to see how that would be configured if it happened.. if they would develop it flush to 1st. Be a big deal, for sure.

There's a lot of room in that lot for a hotel and then some. This should be, nay, must be the location for the mall's fifth anchor: Bloomingdale's. I'd be surprised if Safeway did remain because I imagine the lease rates that the mall could charge for retail in this area border on the absurd.

The one key point that y'all missed that gives Colorado that purple hue is that (like me) there's a boat load of proud GDI's. They're your swing voters.

bunt_q... is right in the sense that an issue that reaches the spat level will make things self correct because of all the independents. Your average Joe and Jane look at it like this: Denver growing like a weed; lots of development but nobody willing to build condos? "Something ain't passing the smell test here."

With yet another oil & gas company announcing they're pulling out of Denver I'm on edge. The DBJ article didn't have any numbers but I suspect the Newfield Exploration numbers (like Linn Energy) are modest. Still, it's not the best of news.

I agree the loss of oil jobs in the region is a concern, but it would be wrong to panic. The total number of oil jobs lost in the entire US in the last year is around 50k, with the majority of them of course being in the biggest companies and they are not in Colorado. Secondly, oil closed at a 2015 high on Friday at around $60 per barrel. Also bear in mind that the whole energy sector in the US represents less than 6% of GDP while leasing and renting is around 13% (last figure from memory). As recently as 2012 when many of the current large builds were starting to be planned, the US was a net importer of oil, it is now its biggest export.

My personal experience in Denver is that it has many diverse engines of economic growth. Many industries grow as a result of a lower energy cost. Denver is growing partly due to the young, energetic and well educated workforce that is moving in and being created here. This will insulate it from uncertainties and position it for more rapid growth as industries search for pools of available talent.

So in my opinion, 1144 will get built at last and it will be a great addition to the skyline and success for its backers.

For me, despite all of my bitching, it's largely a vote for incumbents and the status quo. I am quite pleased with how the Denver Council has been conducting itself. Hope others feel the same.

Thanks for the link; that was a wonderful read though admittedly one needs some patience, mostly of extra time. Props to Alan Prendergast who has written many a great piece for Westword. The never ending tendency to take things for granted and how that can be disrupted in a flash of nature's wrath.

I have viewed numerous times this fun video by The Greenway Foundation but Alan's coverage is amazing. I didn't move out to Colorado until the 1970's but I had numerous friends whose parents would tell stories.
