The future Clarke-Murray overpass is designed into the plan further west of the Moody Street overpass (see below). The Moody overpass also just went through an upgrade for pedestrian/cyclist access so I doubt this support would be for something that is decades away (we as a society have a challenging time thinking that far ahead).

How come there is so many rails in this pic? Are those just extra ones that they temporarily set aside?

Does anyone know if the tunnel boring machine has started digging again? Last I heard, it was undergoing maintenance yet again.

I had always supposed this was a "just in case" beam that would protect the EGL tracks from being completely blocked or damaged by collapse of the overpass. It's an interesting possibility that it is pre-built for possible replacemt of the roadway, however that would have to be many, many years away since the Moody Overpass just had seismic upgrades and below- ground strengthening of its columns last year when the wider sidewalk was added.

In either case, it's truly unfortunate that the 2 EGL tracks were not accommodated by the single gap to the north of this new "beefy" beam. That would have allowed bicycle access along the south side of the tracks, right to Moody Centre Station. The way the tracks are now, any bike route along Clarke Street (which IS the Tfans-Canada Trail) is going to be a gong show of conflict with car traffic.

Based on what it looks like I'm going to go with someone in the planning department (of who? Translink or the city?) specifically told EGL construction to build it because there are plans on the book somewhere to expand the width of it, and obviously they can't do that if they have to rip up the EGL tracks, or build a more expensive bridge.

Another possibility is that there might be a track protection/suicide-net that covers the tracks like at Broadway and Commercial's Grandview cut area that all the trash collects on.

Having a bike path under the overpass would have been great. Too bad.

I'm not inside Port Moody City Hall, but I certainly watch and listen there. Can be pretty certain this didn't come from the City. A general problem all through design and construction has been lack of communication and coordination between TransLink, Province, City and EGRT, with fault on all sided I would say. If there were proper coordination, we might have the very desirable bike lane.

The vandalism (and suicide, I suppose) prevention device is a tall fence added last year, and extending above the CPR tracks, which were previously completely "unprotected."

There are rumblings in PoMo that, when another overpass is built farther west, to serve redevelopment of the sawmill site (NOT the Murray-Clarke Connector) that the current overpass might carry one-way car traffic only, so there would be little or no reason to make it wider.

BTW, Mill and Timber had initiated public consultaion on the waterfront redevelopment:

I didn't get a great look, but I believe I saw the posts for the ATC cables on the inbound guideway curve around Lougheed this morning.

Any updates on when Alice will get fired up again? She's been under maintenance for a fair bit of time now. Or are they waiting for the pre-drilling work to be done uphill from current location.

Tunnel boring will resume around Canada Day, plus or minus a week. No joke.

So the TBM did not move at all??? Wow! I tend to agree with logicbomb....just do it manually!

I guess this goes to show how cut and cover is simply better if you can do it that way. Too bad for Evergreen given the topography, they have no choice but to bore using a TBM.

What do you think this is, the 1880's?

A lot of stuff we do today is to reduce the risk of people being killed. If that adds time, so be it.

*WOW* The financial penalties for these delays should be truly punitive by now. Hard to imagine Evergreen can open for full service by "Fall 2016" if the bare basic tunnel is finished less than a year before then.

The tunnel was originally supposed to be complete more than a month ago, giving lead time of 16 months to the original opening day in "Summer 2016."

Wrong. The tunnel was originally supposed to be complete December 2014.

TBM Alice was launched at the Port Moody portal in March 2014, and the tunnel was supposed to take about a year to complete.
