I actually think Providence has done better with trees than most of Huntsville. The general philosophy on development here seems to be "If it grows, it goes." I see developments in places like Atlanta and DC that do a MUCH better job of preserving trees and green areas.

Whatever you do in this city cut down every tree you can to put up crap.

The Village of Providence continued its expansion efforts Thursday with an official kickoff of Phase VIII, which will create 52 custom homes at the Huntsville neighborhood development.

Developer David Slyman said 15 of the homes are currently under construction at the west end of the Providence bridge, with more to be added over time. The eighth phase represents a $25 million investment, Slyman said.

Officials also took the opportunity to celebrate winning the 2014 Community of the Year Award from the National Association of Home Builders and the Platinum Award for Best Mixed-Use Community. The awards recognize outstanding achievement and innovation each year.

"When you get the Community of the Year from the National Home Builders Association, that is something that nobody else has done as they said in Alabama for 30 years, but it is also something that makes us very proud to be part of Huntsville," Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle told the crowd. "As part of Huntsville, this shows that Huntsville is always on the cutting edge."

Slyman said he and his brother, Todd, had planned to cut the ribbon on Phase VIII late last year, but wet weather "put us way behind the eight ball."

He said home sales have been rapidly picking up since the weather has improved.

"We expect it won't be too long until we announce Phase IX," he said.

Only one-third of the Village has been built, and more than $350 million has been invested since its inception. The Village of Providence now has more than 200 homes, 226 apartments, two national hotels, several restaurants and businesses, and over 450 workers.

Slyman, who said another 400 homes will be built at the Village of Providence, said new multi-family and retail components should come to fruition in the future.

"On the Village side, we'll have some other announcements coming," he said. "We've got another corporation getting ready to locate here. We've got another hotel to announce shortly, and another phase of our Providence Place Apartments."

Big changes coming to Madison Square Mall which has new owners

RCP Companies, the firm behind the new Whole Foods and CityCentre at Big Spring mixed-use developments in Huntsville, said The Grove Huntsville has acquired the property from former owner CBL & Associates for $5 million in cash.

Spokeswoman Lindsay Harper said RCP, which is working as the developer for The Grove Huntsville, isn't ready to give details about the future of the property.

It looks like RCP (involved with Madison Square) are going to include a second phase in their Merchant Walk project. The link below is the leasing brochure for Merchant Walk which includes renderings and site plans for the second phase on pages 2 & 16. RCP seems to be doing some really good work with this project and City Centre, hopefully they will be able to do something exciting with MSM.

Interesting info. I see Mountain High listed on the leasing plan. A second location or are they moving from Bridgestreet? I wasn't aware that the corner across from Whole Foods had been sold.

The Avenue downtown is underway and has two restaurants signed on with possibly a third.

Developer Charlie Sealy III said he has signed letters of intent from two restaurants that want to be part of his latest project, The Avenue.
Sealy declined to name the restaurants but did say one is a local concept and the other is from out of town. He said he is in negotiations with a third restaurant.
Sealy has an aggressive construction schedule for The Avenue. He hopes to have the commercial space roughed in by February, with the first apartments ready by late spring or early summer 2016.
From al.com

Meanwhile over at the much ballyhooed Constellation project..crickets and tumbleweeds.
Developers are running all over and around this town with ideas and projects but nothing from probably the best site in town.

Merchants Walk

I noticed the Whole Foods brochure last year showed things across Bob Wallace and I wondered about that.

Last week there was an auction sign at the Mallory/Aurora Tech bldg so guess they are closing/moving and that bldg will come down and make room for more of the merchants walk stuff.

It would seem the developer is a master of anticipation but a disaster of execution.
But I still believe he will come through..cautious and proper planning usually win out. Whatever ends up being there will be a huge success.
Meanwhile as posted here several months ago
Cinema Management Group formally announced today it is building CinePlanet 15 Cinema, a 15-screen movie theater behind Publix on 2050 Hughes Road in Madison. Although the project is slightly behind schedule due to rainy weather, the state-of-the-art theater is on target to open by Christmas.

Town Madison - New Site Plan

The Sembler Company, which is handling the leasing of Town Madison, has a new site plan which shows a pretty large shopping center, however, it has fewer out parcels than what is shown on the Lennar Commercial website:http://www.sembler.com/property/property-details.aspx?propertyid=134

The website also has a lot of cool aerial pictures of the site, too. Also the population statistics for the area are interesting - for the 5 mile radius, there are 57,000 people with an average household income of $95K. Retailers will like those stats.

With the upcoming tearing down of Madison Square Mall and redevelopment of that land, it's pretty likely that both Sears and JC Penney will relocate here as they will have easy access to the whole HSV Metro area with the I-565 interchange.

Now it will be interesting to see the other stores and restaurants who locate there. The Sembler website seems to provide more up to date info than the Lennar Commercial does.

nice find..another boring large strip mall. I agree about Sears and or Penneys
unless the Madison Square rebuild includes them. We will hear more about those plans in a few days.
I sense this boring strip mall will be similar to the one in Alabaster along I-65.
The best thing about this development is the I-565 interchange wonder if the access roads could be extended to Hughes Rd

I find it interesting that the stores are facing AWAY from the interstate. To me, that says they are going to have stores catering more to the neighborhood rather than to the city as a whole.

Welp, So Much For Volvo.

South Carolina landed its second car factory this year, luring Volvo Car Corp. with a financing package that offers about 25 cents in incentives for every dollar the Chinese-owned auto maker spends.

Sounds like this state couldn't really compete for this one
but this is interesting from the article

Southern states are also beefing up education efforts.

Clemson University’s new $9 million, 75,000-square-foot automotive research facility in Greenville, S.C., is already full of research and development firms that have taken every inch of free space even before it opens its doors. Auburn University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Tennessee Technological University are setting up a new engineering research center like the one at Clemson.

Auburn also has a research center here in Huntsville in Research Park working closely with the high tech companies along with NASA and the US Army

Yeah, I noticed that too. Auburn also has an Ag research center on Mooresville Rd in Limestone county not far from the Sewell tract. Not that has anything to do with anything.

at Belle Mina, it's been there since 1929. The University has 14 Agriculture Research/Extension centers or so scattered around the state.

There is a story I have seen lately that Aston Martin may be building cars in Alabama.
