Fairlie-Poplar is nice now, but has the potential to be an amazing neighborhood with some more residents living nearby...

Mercedes-Benz NA taps architectural firm Gensler to design new HQ complex.

Mercedes-Benz USA Inc. (MBUSA) selected Gensler as the architecture firm for its new headquarters facility in metro Atlanta.

The soon-to-be Atlanta-based company reported Gensler will design a 250,000-square-foot office building that will house around 1,000 MBUSA employees when it opens in 2018. For perspective of their work, the firm designed the Shanghai Tower.

In addition to the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China and second tallest in the world, Gensler projects include the 2016 Rio Olympic Games master plan, the Westin Hotel at Denver International Airport and corporate offices for Facebook, The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) and General Electric (NYSE: GE).

While I am glad to have the HQ for Mercedes Benz, I am now very interested in what will take place with the new NCR HQ in Midtown. I am now sitting on pins and needles just waiting for renderings to be released.

Now, if we can somehow get the 45 story Eviva on Peachtree St, the 40+ story Related apartment tower @ 22 14th St, the NCR HQ complex and 60 and 57 story towers by design firm Arquitectonica @ 98 14th Street to break ground and I will be a very happy lady.

Wow, this is rising quickly. I am really pleased to "see" (from afar) how well Midtown is developing. Thank you for the picture Ant.

How is the apartment building at Peachtree and 5th Street coming along? Although it's only ten stories, it' adding 290 residential units that will go a long way in helping to enhance the pedestrian experience in South Midtown.

i randomly drove past Mercedes' old NJ HQ last weekend on my way to the Poconos and it was so nondescript and in such a bland (although wealthy) part of the state. Atlanta's HQ is sure to be a more pleasing location for their employees.

Civic Center RFP process down to 2 developers

According to BizNow.com, "The quest to redevelop the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center is now down to two contenders with two very different visions."
1. Texas-based Weingartern Realty Investors is looking to redevelop the 858,600 SF facility and surrounding property into what one source familiar with the proposal says is a more traditional urban mixed-use project.
2.Sources say the second candidate is a consortium of interests that involves entertainer and The Family Feud host Steve Harvey as well as UnReel Studios, a Massachusetts-based augmented reality and virtual set production company responsible for filming such movies as Speed Racer, X-Men Origins and OZ: The Great and Powerful. JLL would act as the master developer of the project in this JV.

While the City of Atlanta is evaluating proposals (via InvestAtlanta), it has made known in its RFP that it wishes to see a new performing arts or event center as part of the project. According to documents, it asks developers to potentially include a venue accommodating up to 3,000 seats for public events.

Not very fast. The first floor is still taking shape. It will probably go faster once they're past that.

News from Today's Atlanta Business Chronicle

Developers line up new projects for Buckhead Village

Quote:
In recent months, Terwilliger Pappas has looked at an up-to-20-story residential project at 2965 and 2975 Peachtree, the current site of an Exxon gas station and the Grand China restaurant.

Now, the developer has turned its attention to a roughly 4-acre site next to the upscale St. Regis Atlanta hotel. The property, which today includes retail businesses such as Drybar Buckhead and Flywheel Sports, is owned by Easlan Capital of Atlanta Inc.

Preliminary discussions about the site have included developing a mixed-used project featuring apartments, retail and even a hotel, according to several commercial real estate leasing and development executives who are active in the Village.

I know that this announcement is not directly related to development...and that is the purpose of the City Compilation Thread...but I feel this could lead to development so.....

Dutch banking software company Backbase picks Atlanta for HQ, will bring 150 jobs.

Backbase, a Dutch banking software company, has picked Atlanta for its North American headquarters — a move that will create up to 150 jobs over the next few years.

Backbase develops digital banking software that enables banks and credit unions to deliver their services such as account overview, wire-transfer, person-to-person payments, remote check deposit and bill-pay via digital channels, such as mobile applications and web portals.

This is yet another digital banking company that has placed a HQ in Atlanta. In recent times Atlanta has scored the HQ or regional bases for quite a few such companies. This adds yet another dimension to Atlanta's diverse industry offerings. This is the type of economic news we want to see.

Big new tower crane going up in South East quadrant of PCM. Could it be for 16 story condo tower discussed way back when PCM was just getting started?

No, can't be. We would know more about it if that had been approved/was beginning construction.

Parking deck and retail building above - which can eventually accommodate a hotel on top, adjacent to the Beltline.
It was published a while back...

Can't help but wonder looking at all the above pictures when all those unsightly power lines in Midtown (of all places) will be buried. I know that there was an initiative to bury all the Peachtree Street lines - but what about the rest of the grid?

It is really encouraging to see so much ACTUAL residential construction going on in Midtown specifically and the City of Atlanta as a whole. With so many proposals in the pipeline, this should be a continuous sight for many years.

The only reason they buried the lines on Peachtree was to accomodate the city parade routes through Midtown (for St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, Pride, etc.) I'm sure the annual economic impact of those events helped offset the costs of burying those lines.

I doubt they will bury lines on cross streets anytime soon...
