Sweet update Locked in!

I was expecting more from Keefer Block. I think a simpler colour scheme of black, grey and white would look alot better than the mishmash of what has been chosen.

The Flats looks great! The shutters are interesting but I wonder how awkward they are to open and close.

I'm liking these buildings going up along main. It'll be a nice street wall

Chinatown activists are right to push back. These two buildings along Main don't complement the area in any way. It's like someone grabbed weak, discarded designs of Yaletown developments from the 90s and decided to reuse them.

The heritage areas of Vancouver should be areas that require more thoughtful design. Slapdash product is not appropriate.

Except that's not why they are pushing back. They won't be happy until it's all low income housing

Yup ok my fault for not reading the article. This specific one basically exclusively quotes the CCAP which you're totally right, is a group that won't be happy until the entire DTES area is all low income housing.

On the general issue of Chinatown development and specifically the 105 Keefer rezone I'd previously read a number of articles where broader complaints where mentioned, such as the lack of amenities for the local seniors population, and the complete lack of relationship to the other buildings in the area.

With many high profile rezonings you attract a big tent of complaints. Similarly the Rize the criticism of that project came from many different sides.

Edit:

This article is a good example that shows some of the criticism beyond the CCAP http://www.vancourier.com/news/vanco...nges-1.1768370

I think it's a bunch of whiners.....the real problem as we have covered in this thread MANY times .... is that the current generation of Asians Canadians have no connection to Chinatown ... they prefer to go to other "asian" centric shipping areas like Richmond or elsewhere in the burbs. Maybe these people could raise some $$ and fund some advertizing.

"why go to Richmond Center when we can come to Chinatown! it smells like piss, hard to park, tones of bums, shit all over the sidewalks! Live the dream in Chinatown!"

there you go .... people will roll in and Chinatown will be saved!

Yup, the place seriously need some serious gentrification. People protest for really selfish reasons: protecting their own cheap rentals or just feeling insecure of people who can afford nicer housing moving to their neighbourhoods.

Porte Framework

I just bought into the Porte Framework development. I have never wished harder for gentrification to take its course in this area.

Planning to squat this place for at least 5 years. I hope things turn around with all the new developments, St Paul's new hospital and Emily Carr University!

Thanks!!

Never seen this kind of development and money being pushed into this area. Taking it a sign of positive things to come.

I'd love it if they modernized Chinatown like how Richmond DT is now.

Why didn't you buy in Richmond then?

In any event, East Pender is going to quickly become a popular destination street.
