Lookin' good. Again, don't get the grass. There's a time and a place for it - like golf courses, for example - but I just don't see how it fits into the Gore.

Which part of Gore Park is considered phase 3?

Probably want people out laying on the lawn relaxing, similar to Central Park or the front lawn of Parliament hill or Boston Common Park. I don't think its that bad of an idea and Hamilton definitely isn't the first city to introduce it.

East of John. Basically the front of the Royal Connaught.

The Connaught is also involved financially with that phase, from what I understand, but the phase 3 timeline aligns better with their schedule for construction/move in to those phases.

As a gathering place for events like Remembrance Day it works.

The park still looks so barren but I'll reserve opinion on that until the trees bloom. I don't mind the photo panels at all, and I tend to be a traditionalist when it comes to memorials (and I think Dreschel was being so Dreschely just to be reactionary)

The square looks all right. I suspect the plaques will not weather well. Hopefully they won't have the sides of them plastered with roller derby notices.

As an aside, the current storefront on Burrito Boyz is a vast improvement to their original storefront.

Maybe that's my issue: is it park? What is a park? Is it not more of a plaza than a park?

I just feel like city planners slap grass down in places for lack of any better idea or perhaps it's just habit. We are a culture obsessed with grass, after all.

I guess I've just never seen anybody sitting let alone lying down on the grass in Gore Park - that would never cross my mind.

It's been messed with so much over the last few decades, it doesn't know what it's supposed to be any more.

Now that the south leg of King is more or less an extension of public space, I hope we see much more use for various activities. Gore could be a mutant hybrid of park, square, and plaza. Gore Squazark, or maybe Gore Pluark.

I don't get the grass obsession either. Some homeowners take pride in their lawns... when I was one of those types, living on a corner lot with boulevards it was just a giant P.I.T.A. that I do not miss.

They planted mainly a species of tree called Skyline Honeylocust.

^Seems to be the tree of choice for the city - many cities in fact. No complaints; it's got a nice shape and offers just enough shade.

I'd like to see more sycamore/ platanus trees but I have a feeling they're a little or perhaps a lot more expensive.

1985-era view of the Gore from the HPL's History of Gore Park.

Gore park looks great. I'm glad they closed the road and made it pedestrian only.

Is anyone else unhappy with the severe lack of trees on the completed section of the Gore, where the memorial is? They cut down so many mature trees (because they had to) but didn't replace them. Now it's barren grass without any shade...

They did replace them, with Oak, Armstrong Maple, and Skyline Honeylocust trees.
Trees don't show height growth for a few years because their roots need time to develop. A tree that gets big fast will likely die at a young age.

Edit:

Here's a photo of a row of Armstrong Maple trees planted similarly to the ones planted in Gore Park along the South side of King. They have a very upright shape which when mature will give the park a very stately feel.
