I'm surprised to hear that some new buildings still have garbage chutes. I personally think the problems they bring outweigh the convenience.

I often times fill in for the workers in our building when they are on holiday and one of the jobs requires me to change the bin under the chute when it's full. The things you see are honestly quite shocking.

Glass jars/vases, loose diapers, fish heads, toys and furniture are all surprisingly common. TONS of different recyclables get tossed out, not just pizza boxes. And the amount of food thrown out is depressing. I would say at least a third, possibly half of the garbage is food. People can be pretty nasty when no one is looking.

Just last month someone stuffed a bed set (pillows, comforter, etc.) down the chute and the sheets got caught on something near the bottom. Well before anyone noticed, the garbage was jammed up past the first floor...

There are frequently huge bangs that you can hear on the first couple floors, especially if the bin is empty. When it's more than half full though, things will often explode all over the place after they land. And of course all the liquids people dump down there just makes it smell gross.

Ok wow, this turned into a rant - I'll stop haha.

Anyways, regarding Walmart, one thing to consider is that Shape may have more difficulty attracting the tenants they want if Walmart signs on. I think brand "image" is one if the main things that goes into choosing a location, so they may back away if they were on the fence.

Walmart is located in Abbotsford's Hightstreet, Victoria's Uptown, South Surrey's Morgan Crossing, New West's Queensborough Landing, and Surrey's Guildford, and they all have been pretty good in attracting some higher end businesses.

Not sure what Brentwood is actually trying to become, though.

With the new rule of separating organically from other waste, 1 garbage chute just make no sense. Garbage chute does not belong to modern day building .

Walmart is located far away from the Brentwood Blvd high street anyway , I don't see how it would affect the image of the town center. Are some people so affected by presence of Walmart that they won't shop at Brentwood? That would be absolutely ridiculous!

... and remember, the there's still Sears as a anchor tenant for the mall - some would see that as a deterrant to high end as well.

But Brentwood is located within reach of good upper middle class neighbourhoods.
I could even see a Simons opening up there if they don't go into Metrotown.
Simons would certainly be a destination anchor if they move to Brentwood (i.e. anchoring the Zellers end).

I see that BMO will be moving to the opposite side of the mall where they have been since 1961 when the centre opened.

Other than that, no other news lately? the Walmart rumor is rampant though in the neighbourhood.

Walmart actually saved Capilano Mall. It was on its death bed and Walmart brought people back. People came from downtown before other Walmarts like Grandview were built, but even now it's still in much better shape than it was. It almost pains me to say that.

The renovated Wal-Mart (now a SuperCentre) at Capilano Mall looks great, and it's very, very close to downtown Vancouver by car, esp. late night when there's no Lions Gate traffic.

Yes! I find it's easier to drive the than grandview. Hope Sears closes at cap and they can redo that section of the mall. That hallway going to Sears is a dead zone. Oh Shit sorry I thought this was the retail thread.

But to bring it back to Brentwood when is tower 2 going to start construction. I thought they had sold a bunch already

Maybe Royal Bank can open up a branch in Brentwood Mall too

walmart is the only thing keeping lougheed town centre alive, the bay there is always dead and so many stores have gone in recent years but walmart is the draw

i wonder if a walmart at brentwood would be too close to lougheed though

Bay would be a great replacement for Sears at Brentwood. Lougheed is pretty dead and the store is quite boring as well. Wishful thinking.

If I really think about it, Brentwood mall really has nothing to worry about. By the time all 13 planned towers are completed, 4 towers from Solo District, 10 towers from Concord Place Brentwood, plus upcoming Gilmore station redevelopment and eventually GM dealership accross the street will sell the land to a developer. In the end, there will be so many residents living in the area that the mall is guaranteed to be successful.

Brentwood mall is almost dead because of the massive redevelopment. Lougheed mall is dying anyway. Imo better to concentrate the effort to revitalize one mall ,by finishing the reconstructions, adding services and "resuscitate"one mall. Rather than starting up on Lougheed which will kill it even more due to horrible traffic, mean time Brentwood still barely surviving.

Looks like they're moving along with it already, albeit just in the planning phase. While it might take 20 years to finish the entire vision of the project, I think in 10-12 years we'll see a significant amount of redevelopment not just on the mall lands but in the surrounding area (which there is already quite a bit built).

Brentwood was already pretty much dead before the redevelopment, so I don't see how it's a big deal that it's even more dead right now. It was to be expected and I don't think Shape is dumb enough to have thought that the mall would somehow be lively while the entire thing is being rebuilt.

That said, within 5-7 years the Brentwood neighbourhood (not just the mall) will be one of the most interesting town centers in the region with an amazing amount of residential and commercial floor space completed and 10x the amount in construction (a lot of it nearing completion).

Now is also the time to redevelop Lougheed. The EG Line is a great incentive and will certainly make the town center a whole lot more accessible and convenient for people in the northeast part of the region. I don't see why Shape would want to wait anothe 10-15 years to begin redevelopment of that property and let it continually slip into decay/irrelevance.
