An interesting case example with my grandma's neighbour. He lived in East Vancouver all his life. His wife's health has been declining and requires full time care near VGH. Recently cashed out on a very old home for over $1m and bought a 2 br condo across the street from VGH so he can easily visit his wife everyday. Now he's living off his pension and profits in a new (well, technically old) home where he no longer needs the space. I can envision similar scenarios happening in the OV with seniors or their children buying/renting units to be near the new hospital.
Emily Carr is moving into the Flats, a few blocks east of the Olympic Village. If the referendum goes through there will be an underground skytrain stop there as well.

Now the only thing missing in the area is the streetcar. It would be such a fantastic addition.

So basically the "Olympic Village" train station will be the furthest line from the actual OV.

Finally, this hospital proposal is making the neighbourhood more exciting. I guess that's the perks of having lots of vacant land lying around, with lots reserved for mixed developments or something breathtaking.

The station was originally "False Creek South" - the City wanted it renamed "Olympic Village" even after the Olympic Village moved eastwards out of fears of terrorist attacks launched from Cambie Bridge.
Either it was the cache of naming it "Olympic" or real estate plays at word for marketing of the condo units (I can't recall the relative time frames).

And then Rennie renames the neighbourhood "The Village on False Creek". I have not heard a single person refer to the neighbourhood as this. A Craigslist search shows 10 results for "Village on False Creek" (which is just used as a keyword in the ad at the bottom), and 180 results from "Olympic Village".

It would be nice to change the banners to "Olympic Village" so its consistent with what the people actually refer it to.

That's some great history. I thought the city controlled the rights to the station since they contributed to have it happen. As far as I can recall it wasn't part of the original plan.

Considering all of the rezoning done around the Canada Line in general, the area immediately surrounding OV station has virtually nothing.

As for relocating the OV itself, I think it's a nicer spot of land to be at the end of False Creek, near a bigger park and Science World. Whereas being near the bridge would be really bad on the bridge side, especially considering the max building heights.

Yeah, the City did pitch in the money to build the station rather than it be a future station.
The City owns the lands surrounding the station, so it is the one sitting on it.

That probably would have been the IOC who would have required it.

I wonder if the change could have resulted from the IOC limiting Olympic trademark (official mark) rights.

I would assume there is a special trademark (official mark) licence in place for Olympic Village Station.

Remember that the original marketing name was "Millennium Water". "The Village on False Creek" is actually much closer to the colloquial "Olympic Village" than the original name.

Emily Carr University (and some SFU/UBC and BCIT classrooms as well).

Fencing up on NE side of Plaza of Nations

Anyone know what's happening up on the NE side of Plaza of Nations, (between the seawall and GM Place)? There is fencing up around the area and some trailers. Typically that's were cars would park for stadium events, etc. Could they be setting up for another movie or is construction on something beginning?

Ah, my mistake. I thought it was originally marketed as the "Olympic Village". I think it would have been a nice finishing touch if the City just licensed the term, that way it lessens any confusion of using different name labels.

I noticed the curbs as well. It looks like they're maybe working on some sort of change to the bike lane structure, but it's clearly too narrow and not at the quality the city would do. Maybe done by some low baller contractor of whoever owns the plaza of nations?

Sun Run is this weekend. BC Place/Plaza of Nations/Free Concord land is usually the ending spot. Tons of vendors and tables are part of it.

How's the new proposed hospital near Science World going to affect the market in this area? The last time I went to St. Paul's hospital, the demographic has changed dramatically. Lots of drug addicts go to that hospital now, it was just a really unpleasant experience. I sworn to myself that I will never go to that hospital ever again. Rather drive a bit further somewhere in Vancouver.
