The Central Question: Food and drink businesses thrive in Portland's changing Central Eastside

By Elliot Njus | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Before "foodie" was a household word, and long before Portland became a destination for them, Geoff Latham was selling high-end cuts of meat out of his car.

Latham started selling game and poultry under the name Nicky USA in 1990, when he worked out of his garage in Beaverton and made deliveries in a Ford Escort. As Portland restaurateurs and diners adopted a farm-to-fork ethos, his company grew into a corner of a Central Eastside warehouse shared with a mushroom processor and organic vegetable distributor.

Nicky USA now ships $12 million in meat a year and fills the warehouse's entire 15,000-square-foot ground floor. Latham's growth matches that of Portland's fine-dining scene, a shift that's also changing the fabric of the Central Eastside Industrial District.
...continues at the Oregonian.

The developers have so far only met with the City for Early Assistance, which is only a preliminary step. Not every project that receives Early Assistance goes ahead. That site has a Design overlay, so the Design Commission (or possibly BDS) will review any potential building before they submit for building permits.

I don't know why, but that building design makes me think it was made for Legend of Zelda....

Sign of the times: that apartment project at 419 E Burnside must be on ice. A new sign for a car dealer just went up.

The permit is under review, with corrections received as recently as Tuesday. I don't think people would be working on it if it was cancelled.

Must be internal issues; I don't really think the economy is slowing down. If anything, it's still revving up and drawing employers to city center.

It's like architects are incapable of designing buildings for unusual footprints. It feels like every time a building is proposed for a lot that isn't square or rectangular, the architect finds a way to put a square or rectangular building on it.

I really dig this design, though! Wrong example to criticize, though I agree. I really hope the Morrison market building is triangular like the flatiron in NYC.

The "Ben's Auto Wholesale" signs? Those have been there since it closed, they were just never removed.

Edit: I drove by it today just to be sure and I did not see any "new" signage.

419 E. Burnside must still be alive, according to a quick little blurb today in The Oregonian:

East Burnside apartments: RH Burnside LLC has proposed a six-story, 158-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail space at 419 E. Burnside St. in Portland.

Portland Rock Gym's expansion will add 10,000 feet of terrain (Renderings)

Climbers looking for a ton more terrain — plus a place to grab a beer once they’re spent for the day — will find it in a newly-expanded version of Portland’s oldest climbing gym.

Portland Rock Gym is currently adding 12,000 square feet to its existing gym at 21 N.E. 12th Ave., 10,000 of which will be new climbing terrain. That brings PRG up to 25,000 square feet of climbing space, which ranges from soaring walls to bouldering areas. The construction project, headed up by Rainier Pacific Construction, will also add 95 bike stalls and a separate room for instruction and youth programs. The latter amenity is expected to free up existing climbing terrain for more climbers.

In addition, PRG’s new space, which will be capped with a green roof, will feature a soundproof yoga studio and a climbers’ lounge, complete with a café serving food and beer from a local brewery.

Overheard two men at a Coffee shop near the site say they were going to lose their parking (on the 419 car lot) next week... Site work soon to begin?

Looks like 419 E Burnside might be a drinking lot for a while.

The Central Question: OMSI at odds with Portland, some neighbors, over housing in industrial area

Business and property owners in Portland's Central Eastside Industrial District have mostly agreed on a 20-year plan to balance new development with the district's longtime manufacturing and warehousing character.

Mostly, but not entirely. One of the most prominent landowners still isn't on board.

OMSI, the venerable museum that draws 1 million annual visitors, owns 18 acres of land on the east bank of the Willamette River near a sparkling new light-rail station set to open in five months. More than half of that land is a blank slate -- a rare opportunity for ground-up development in the central city -- and OMSI has ambitions for an "innovation district" with the museum as a centerpiece.

I can see and understand both sides of this issue. I agree with OMSI that their land is isolated from the rest of the industrial district. Though at the same time, I would love to see buildings going up to cater more to jobs than housing. OMSI's district would be a great location for a tech district as we become more attractive to that industry.
