Does the 5:08am listed first train for King George to Waterfront mean that that train from King George will be the first to arrive at Waterfront or do trains start all along the line in that direction starting at 5:08?

Trains drive Not In Service to King George, where they start their trip inbound. First train leaves KG at 5:08. Trains do not start all along the line. The 5:08 would be the first to arrive at Waterfront around 5:48.

I believe there is a train that starts at Lougheed and heads towards Waterfront around the same time.

Yeah I didn't look in to the Millennium Line schedule for answering that. There's also one or two trains that leave Waterfront eastbound before the first train from King George arrives.

But for a general quick answer, the first train time from King George is close enough.

From the Metro Vancouver website - click on the link below for a bigger version.

Of note:

1986:
"Suburban Rail" from Lions Bay to Lonsdale.
"Streetcar or Articulated Trolley Bus" from UBC to Brentwood. No LRT on Lougheed.

Probably because the Canada Line wheels are used for traction, so they and the rails are continually ground smooth.

SkyTrain wheels just support the vehicle, so they don't get ground smooth, nor do they grind the rails smooth (the SkyTrain has (or used to have) those special rail grinding vehicles to smooth out noisy sections)

It's probably also because our linear motor trains are mostly pretty damn old - the Mark Is have been in service for 25+ years, the first batch Mark IIs for 10+ (though I find the second batch Mark IIs, which are now 5 years old, to be fairly quiet).

The newer linear motor train systems here in Japan have far quieter, more pleasant trains because they naturally incorporated advances in the technology. The Fukuoka Nanakuma Line is pretty quiet for a fully-underground line, and the Yokohama Green Line gives a taste of that quiet-ness above ground.

If you guys want an idea, here's a video of the brand new 12-600 series train just delivered to the Toei Oedo line in Tokyo. These 8-car trains were delivered literally a few months ago and are the world's newest linear motor trains. I was in Tokyo recently and I do believe I rode this new 12-600 train one time as I remember one train had these particular LCD screens. Note that the Oedo Line is completely underground (so think future Broadway subway when watching this).

They've been upgrading the wireless service on Canada Line the past couple of days.. Rogers/Fido now get LTE and it works a lot better.

Wind Mobile also has service on the Canada Line underground sections as well. My friend noticed this as early as 3 weeks ago.

In other news, is anybody else mildly excited about the updates to the LED maps on the MK2.5 trains that will be required as a result of the Evergreen line? I'm curious what is behind the map (an array of configurable LEDs?), and whether or not they have to custom order a whole new panel for each section.

Well, personally I'd be hoping they'd be more like the screens used in Tokyo like the one I posted above but if that's a few years down the road than so be it.

The noise on Expo/M lines is the wheels on the track, not the motors. It has gotten noticeably worse in the last 2-3 years.

The Canada Line screeching around a curve? Seriously? It is painful, unlike anything on Skytrain.

People from other parts of the world generally find our system (Canada Line and Skytrain) pretty impressively quiet on average.

Where I am living now I have become accustomed to loud trains.

It's actually been quite some time since there was any significant screeching on the curves around Queen Elizabeth park, so this is a fairly moot point to dwell upon. In early days it was sure awfully loud, though.

I always presumed that it was the lightweight / lightly insulated frame of the Mk Is that was the main problem. An engineer relative told me when I was a little kid that when he rode the train for the first time he was furious at the wimpy walls and how loud it was in there.

The Mark IIs are better, but still on purpose they have very thin walls, and the style of doors (never allowing a tight seal like on the Rotem trains) let wind through let alone noise.
That being said, I've been on LRT / 'real trains' in other cities and some are quieter but some are louder.

By the way, does anyone know the purpose / function of the following? At the end of some station platforms there are metal bars with what looks like coax cable running along the tops like clothesline. Is this part of the 'leaky coax' RF communication system with the trains, added to enhance the signal at those locations? They didn't use to all be there like that.

The carpeting used to do an amazing job at dampening the cabin noise. I might of mentioned it once before. Anyways it was taken out shortly after because it was impossible to keep it clean.

Like between Nanaimo and 29th Ave? It's part of the intrusion system for the at-grade portions in case a vehicle for example jumped the road and crashed through the fence. I think it was added around the time that the first generation IR curtains were added to the ends of the stations to prevent people wandering down the track/service walkway. I can only assume it's tensioned wire with spring loaded switches in the poles.

Do you ride the train regularly? It's still really bad.

Any noise generated by the trains is much worse in the Canada Line tunnel than the elevated Expo line.
