In case there was ever any doubt (there shouldn't have been), Frankfurt is back with daily service, minus some exceptions in April/May.

I know their plan was to route people to Toronto for European and further bound flights but I wonder if they know how much business they lost to KLM/Air France and others. Personally I took two long trips on KLM as the connections made more sense without the direct Frankfurt flight. This loss can carry over into the summer as less people have Stare alliance status and therefore are less inclined towards Air Canada over other groups.

Does anyone know, if Frankfurt will continue to be seasonal for this year or is it going to operate during the winter months? I was told by AC employee at YOW that the reason YOW-FRA was suspended during the winter months (14/15) was because AC didn't have a spare equipment (767) ....allegedly
Personally, I think they (AC) should keep it x 4 weekly during the winter months!

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here. Long time reader. Yeah it would be nice if FRA returns to year-round. Even if it goes back to its original 3x weekly winter service. I've read that AC like to say they want at least 5x weekly in the low season for transatlantic, but YYZ-CPH operated at 3x this winter.

Here's a tiny bit of possible exciting news (and get your cameras ready). Lufthansa will be operating a single FRA-YUL-YOW-YUL-FRA A333 flight on Sunday, May 31st as per http://airlineroute.net/2015/04/07/lh-yow-may15/. There is no sign of this LH flight on neither LH's nor AC's websites. Therefore, I'm guessing LH have a huge block of YOW pax that day and are tagging their YUL flight during the time it would otherwise be sitting on the ground at YUL. Say they have 150 thru YOW pax, AC's Dash 8s wouldn't be able to handle it. AC838/839 are operating as scheduled on May 31st.

Lufthansa 478 from Frankfurt to Ottawa then to Montreal is also suspect flight Air Canada 9633.

Interesting find... From the Lufthansa website:

Sunday - May 31 LH 478 - FRA-YOW (11h45 - 14h05 - 0 stops).

Sunday - May 31 LH 478 - FRA-YUL (11h45 - 15h45 - 0 stops).

Looks like the LH website is in error about the stops... but the plan for May 31 is FRA - YOW - YUL - FRA.. Cool

12 hours FRA-YOW? That seems a little long... booked a flight TLV-YYZ a few weeks ago and that's 12 hours and a considerable ways further on each end...

Super cool indeed. I saw this a few weeks ago on the AC timetable as a one-off LH flight YOW-YUL with the 333 as the aircraft and thought it was a mistake because at the time I couldn't find anymore information about it. The YOW-YUL flight on LH is bookable on AC's site if anyone wants to take a joyride while they can.

Correct it arrives YOW at 14h05 and departs again at 15h05. So you'll be able to grab pics of landing and take-off. I'll most likely go.

Anyway know if there is an app where I can listen to the Tower's radio so I have a heads-up to which runway they will be using for landing and the frequency of the tower's radio. Much thanks!

??? depart FRA 11h45 - arrive YOW 14h05...

8 hours 20 minutes... gate to gate... sounds exactly right for a westbound transatlantic flight...

edit: wasn't quick enough on the keyboard... this is in reference to 1overcosc's post 2 up from this one

It's just over an 8 hour flight. FRA is GMT+2.

Only available fare for that flight is $739... I've done some silly things to satisfy my need for flying, but I think I'll have to take a pass on that one

Argh, derp. Don't mind me, I haven't had my coffee yet.

I saw Sunday - May 31 LH 478 - FRA-YOW (11h45 - 14h05 - 0 stops) and thought it meant 11h45 travel time. Oopsies.

The LH 478 flight may have something to do with the FIFA Womens World Cup. Some of the games will be played at TD Place so maybe this flight is bringing over some of the teams.
******Looks like they are bringing over the German Womens team on that day******** They will be playing their first round games here in Ottawa.

Ah so my suspicions about a large group flying in as the reason for this one-off FRA-YOW were correct. Should make for some good yields on YOW-FRA for AC838/839 for AC/LH around that time.

$700 for YOW-YUL sounds about average fare for that route. Does anyone know why AC charge over $200 one-way on YOW-YUL? Why do they deliberately discourage collecting a tiny bit of O&D traffic on the route? For the odd business that has offices near YOW and Dorval, I bet there'd be a few pax for this if the taxes-in one-way fare was more like $75 as the travel time compared to the train or driving would be similar or slightly less by air in a situation like this. Wouldn't it encourage say a biz person from Toronto with a morning meeting in Ottawa and an afternoon meeting in Montreal to consider flying YYZ-YOW-YUL-YYZ as opposed to a train or bus ride on the YOW-YUL leg? It's baffling what airlines do sometimes, especially when they have a monopoly.

There's very little O&D demand between Ottawa and Montreal. With taxi-ing, the long amount of time it takes to get off a plane, security, getting there the necessary amount of time early, etc., it's faster to take the train or drive unless the origin & destination points are very near the airport in both cities. That route likely exists solely for connections. Even then, I imagine there's a lot of Ottawans who just drive to Trudeau instead. That's what my family always did growing up if we were faced with a connection through YUL.

In any case, given the high environmental cost of air travel compared to ground travel, it's good that it's like this.

Even for Ottawa & Toronto, flying is not very competitive time wise.

HSR, if it ever came to be, could strike a powerful blow to the Ottawa-Toronto-Montreal air triangle.

I would much rather see Via work with the Airlines to build HSR in the Detroit-Quebec City corridor.
Nobody gets seriously hurt, and large amounts of capital means the project actually gets built.
