The proposed development came about through an Action Ottawa proposal call to housing providers to build up to 100 affordable housing units on this site. This action responds to the recognition that there is a growing need for affordable housing options in Barrhaven. Our client Multifaith Housing Initiative with their project management consultant CAHDCO and our consultant team prepared a 98 unit proposal that was selected by the City as the winning submission. This application follows that process.
The site is located in the Longfields sector of Barrhaven and is within a large plan of subdivision that is still in the process of being built out. The site abuts two streets. To the north the front lot line abuts Via Chianti as well as Hydro Ottawa substation and to the south the site is bounded by Via Verona.
Three housing typologies have been employed to respond to site conditions and to reinforce the Allee. At the west end where the site abuts the Transitway and is sliced by a wide sewer easement, two low rise apartment buildings are proposed with their main entrances oriented to the Grand Allee. Together these 4 level wood frame buildings will provide 50 smaller units aimed at singles and couples.
In the centre of the development are 4 blocks of back-to-back townhouses providing 36 units. The absence of back yards also concentrates activity in the public realm reinforcing security while building community.
At the east end of the site where the property abuts the back side of a future development, two 6 unit blocks of conventional townhomes have been planned. These larger family units have a distinct front and rear yard.
