The lack of movement at Fundy Quay in SJ has nothing to do with a lack of provincial funding; it has to do with a lack of movement from private developers (as far as we know). Your dislike towards the Premier is fairly obvious but at this point you're simply reaching.

Provincial funding for community buildings which are art/theatre-related are tremendously enticing for Provincial and Federal funding programs.

I did. I'm not suggesting that the Province will put money towards this project but they're more likely to fund a theatre in Fredericton than an events centre in Moncton because of the arts, cultural, and community nature of the project.

But looks like Dieppe is keeping their location

Here is the PAC application for the development at Golf Greens off Hanwell Rd. This had previously been approved but they have asked for changes to the exterior (no longer all brick). The foundation work has already started.

It was a brick eyesore that IIRC did have some pool-related businesses according to signs I saw when walking by it occasionally. I think they dated back to the rail-age (It is right next to the train station), with a modern addition added on the York street end at some point. The brick portion has been torn down and a 3 story? (I think, we have pictures of the renderings further back in this thread) is being built onto the York street addition. Looks to be primarily office space.

It's only going to be slightly taller in height, still 2 floors to match the newer building.

The city has Released a FAQ on the new Playhouse plans, why the old one isn't being repaired and why the new one is planned the way it is. Mostly information we've heard (and talked about) before, but good to have it in a handy 'official 'document.

I just don't think that it's fair that Saint John can keep the Imperial and Moncton the Capitol yet the are both 90 to 100 years old.

And some pics I took today of the new building on Queen street, between Westpointe and the Legion.

They still have 1 or 2 floors to pour up top, but they've started on the outside layer of the 3rd floor now.

Not sure what you mean by "fair" but it's arguable that those buildings are actually historic.

I love the capitol theatre in Moncton. Always go see the Just for Laughs shows there.

Their historicity may be questionable, but it is true that there are undeniably only about a dozen or so original style vaudeville (or opera) houses in the entire country. As such they are unquestionably unique and worthy of preservation purely for architectural and stylistic reasons.

Sorry, I may have misworded that. I was saying that the historic aspect of the Fredericton Playhouse was questionable. I'm not questioning that the Moncton and SJ buildings are historic.

I just mean they are still the staple venue for their respective cities. The playhouse is that for Fredericton right now, but not for long. As soon as you see the playhouse you know right away that it's Fredericton.

The Playhouse does have a bit of a visual impact on the downtown views; but there's nothing to say that the nuPlayhouse won't have similar impacts. Considering the locations they are proposing (especially the one behind City Hall), visual impact will be a very important aspect of the new design I'm sure.

Beyond that, I'm not all that sure the current Playhouse is worth saving, especially in light of everything else that has been said in the FAQ. In looking at it compared to The Imperial or the Capitol, it doesn't (to me, and admittedly I have no real experience in this judgement) seem to have the historical weight that those other theatres have. Of course, with the awards its gotten through the years, it does have that going for it.

In the end, and in light of the FAQ, I think I'm more supportive of the nuPlayhouse than restoring the old. Even if it will likely take my preferred spot for the downtown Transit station.
