For the first time in a decade, Portland is outpacing Washington County in job growth and median income, according to a recent study of state employment data.

From 2010 to 2013, Washington County's median income fell 5.4 percent, from nearly $52,000 to less than $49,000 a year. Portland's, meanwhile, jumped more than 8.5 percent, from $45,698 to $49,616 a year.

During the same period, Washington County's employment growth slowed to 1 percent while Portland's climbed 2.4 percent.

Although the differences are small, the trend could threaten Washington County's reputation as the region's economic driver.

"Washington County is not doing as good as the city of Portland in attracting smart, young, educated people," said Christian Kaylor, an economist with the Oregon Employment Department who headed the study. "It's growing, but it's not doing as well as its neighbor to the east." ...

Nike adds more than 2,000 jobs, exceeds state goal

Matthew Kish
Staff Reporter-
Portland Business Journal

Quote:
Nike has hired more than 2,000 workers at its Oregon headquarters since 2012, far exceeding one of two parts of an agreement it reached with state lawmakers in exchange for special tax treatment.

Gov. John Kitzhaber called an extraordinary special session of the Legislature in December 2012 in order to strike a controversial deal with Nike.

In exchange for a commitment that it would create at least 500 jobs and spend at least $150 million on campus expansion by the end of 2016, lawmakers agreed to give Nike "tax certainty," and continue taxing the company only on the sales of products in Oregon.

In a news release Tuesday, Kitzhaber said the sportswear giant now employs more than 8,700 full-time workers at is sprawling Washington County headquarters, a 31 percent increase since January 2012. ...

Nike has nearly 351 acres of contiguous land in Washington County, one of the largest corporate campuses in America.

1419 NW 14th Ave, in the Pearl. For the past few months they've been doing a major refurbishment of the existing warehouse. I walked past it earlier this evening, and noticed they'd installed the Jaguar Rover logos in the lobby. I didn't realize it until now, but that perspective is a concept image for the front courtyard. The brown building in the background is Planet Granite, which also recently opened.

Just wondering what you all think of Hanjin's departure. Will it impact Nike/Adidas/Intel?

I'm not too worried based on this analysis of their threat to leave back in 2013. We already have had a long-dying port. The only thing I wonder about is if Intel/Nike/Addidas will just be shipping out of Tacoma now? Didn't they use the port?

I imagine Intel use air freight. As for Nike / Adidas... do they even manufacture anything in Oregon?

From what I know, I don't believe either Adidas or Nike do any manufacturing in Oregon. I could be wrong because I am not 100% sure.

I don't think Adidas or Nike manufacture anything in the US, or North America for that matter.

Oh, right, duh. I wasn't thinking.

OPB today was talking about the plight of farmers, who will find it much more expensive to ship their product.

Will they really? I was under the impression T5 was still as operational as ever? That's where all the wheat goes.

Haha, well, I didn't hear the whole discussion, but they were talking about farmers having to find other ways to ship to Tacoma now. AFAIK all the talk was about T6.

Nike doesn't manufacture anything in Portland. Its only their corporate headquarters - everything is manufactured in Asia.

I am seriously wondering if there is anyone in Salem that is concerned with this problem. We shouldn't be shutting down a key port to this metro and state. This should be a number one priority to fix.

Is this really a tragedy? I've heard it's actually more expensive over water for businesses than over land for Portland. Also, don't we still have a ton of farm exports? I don't really see this as anything other than a tragedy for the workers there, not really many else, and I do have empathy for them.

Isn't the ethos of Portland not to force infrastructure that might be superfluous? I say this in the spirit of our blocking of new highways/lanes.

We'll still have plenty of bulk farm exports, but lots of farms used shipping containers for smaller load exports to Asian markets. The workers at the port will be relocated by the union in many cases, so I'm not really worried about them.

I'm more worried about the specialty businesses that will now need to arrange for a truck or train to take their loads to/from Tacoma or Seattle at a somewhat higher price and longer lead time. It's probably not going to kill a lot of businesses, but it's another hassle that might encourage companies to locate closer to viable ports instead.

Or another company will see an opportunity here and agree to use Terminal 6 for container operations. It's possible, but it probably won't happen quickly.
