And this is a pretty rare case given that only the downtown zoning by-law even has a 'multiple use sector'. The larger zoning by-law the city works from doesn't.

But we're getting a little ahead of ourselves on this one because, in my experience, tearing down a building within that boundary for parking is strictly verboten (as in not even a conditional use). And any demolition permit at all in the area requires a redevelopment plan subject to design review.

This one isn't going to be able to stay quiet for long.

my tweets definitely caused a sh*t storm. Lost a few followers and possibly some credibility....should have taken a deep breath first, but hopefully it is all exposed and demo can be stopped....lots of media are looking into it.

This is kinda the nice thing about Twitter. You can get the ball rolling on something and others can do the digging. There's more to this than just Hydro outright denying they have anything to do with the buildings and it'll come out. Eventually your credibility will be even greater because you scooped the Free Press on the Skyscraper Forum before either Kives or McNeill got the opportunity.

I agree. The tweet may have been technically incorrect in terms of who might be applying for the demo permit, but come on... if the buildings come down it will be Hydro that's ultimately responsible. Hydro shouldn't be off the hook if they're, for instance, giving money to Calvary Temple so that they can demolish them.

apparently CBC radio had an interview with the pastor on today. Said it was all Hydro's doing. A third party is brokering it.

Based on what we know, Hydro is the architect of this plan. However, Calvary Temple has the power to stop it by not demolishing for surface parking.

Of course, I'm not optimistic... my interactions with churches in Winnipeg have taught me that many of them are fixated on having large amounts of off-street parking. Even if Luke's wasn't demolished to offset the parking lost to the substation, Calvary Temple would still have surface parking on 3 out of the 4 sides of the building...yet that still isn't enough.

I get that they need parking lots for the elderly or handicapped, but why not encourage others to park a block or two away? There is tons of on-street parking within 3 blocks of Calvary Temple, especially on a Sunday morning. Maybe work out a deal with the owners of other various surface lots nearby to let parishoners park there for weekend services. There is room for a certain rookie mayor to be a hero by brokering a win-win deal, hint hint.

I agree...I hope Bowman sees this as an opportunity. I noticed the WFP web poll was about 60-40 in favour of demolition...people are weird.

....yeah,especially a downtown church on a sunday...do they really need surface parking?....there must be 5000 empty stalls within a two minute walk and I'm sure many people come from the area.

This is pretty unfortunate. It sounds like a whole pile of good intentions fell prey to the inexperience. And it sounds like he's taking some people down with him which is even more unfortunate.

But people: don't make these sorts of decisions with money you can't afford to lose. I get that it might be your kid and you may think you're doing them a favour. You aren't. If an objective financial partner doesn't see the merit, it's probably because there isn't one. This is the outcome in most of these scenarios. It will be far easier to repair the damage done from a refusal to finance your very inexperienced child's perhaps poorly conceived dreams than it will be to overcome the resentment and latent animosity of that child mismanaging your life savings into oblivion. I can't even count how many times I've seen projects slowly bleed people dry - big and small.

I sincerely hope there's some ability to recoup cash, but now that lawyers are involved, that opportunity is probably gone.
