SPUIs are roughly twice the cost of a normal interchange. It'll work if they reduce the need for more interchanges elsewhere, but it's still an expensive piece of infrastructure.

I don't see making College as a non-freeway as a big deal. It's unreasonable to expect no-lights on a busy road from Preston to city limits. There aren't enough intersections to handle the incoming traffic. And the cost to build those interchanges is too high for the city to handle.

We'll end up with one maybe two sets of lights between the tracks and city limits. Two sets of lights won't completely disturb flow and will save the city tens of millions of dollars.

Building more and more car infrastructure is only going to encourage people to drive. We need to be focusing on getting people out of their cars and into more sustainable transportation.

We can't even not talk about cars/car infrastructure in this thread, let alone establish policies and a built environment that get people out of them.

Allowing traffic signals for intersections with connector roads essentially downgrades College Dr from an expressway to an arterial corridor. This would be a big blunder East of Circle Dr. College Dr and Circle Dr is soon (if not already) going to handle the traffic volume of a freeway to freeway intersection, and right now there is a big bottleneck from EB to NB traffic at Central Ave. Intersections for Holmwood would add a bottleneck to WB traffic as well.

The amount of traffic heading into and out of Holmwood needs to be handled by a hierarchal network, the solution is not more traffic signals, it's higher capacity arterials in the neighborhood with an efficient interchange to the high speed freeway. Think of it like the respiratory system - the trachea is your freeway, the primary and secondary bronchi are your expressways and arterials, the tertiary bronchi are your collectors and your bronchioles are your locals. Keeping the freeway flowing is the most crucial part of a road network, NEXT you worry about how people get onto the freeway, and so forth.

Picture taken from the ZU facebook page.

Looks like the addition to 303 Pacific Ave is underway.

Here is a link to KSA Group's website which has some renderings of the completed structure.

I'm looking for a little information and I'm hoping that someone on here can direct me as you all seem to know where to go for all things construction.

We currently live in Fairhaven and like the area but are looking to get a bigger place. They are completing the west end of Parkridge south of the Blairmore shopping area which seems like a good potential option for upgrading but staying in a familiar neighbourhood depending on the style of housing that will be built.

My problem is I can't find information on which developer(s) are going to be building out that way. Is there a source for that sort of thing?

Thanks in advance.

This is a great system, if my ultimate destination was the freeway. Lungs operate with a diaphragm, and the hierarchy works because air is either being forced out or sucked in. But I work in a bronchiole and live in another bronchiole, as do most people, and we aren't all going one direction at once. This backflow from distributing people as they exit the freeway backs up the freeway as well. Wouldn't it be a far more efficient system if you could diffuse traffic across a grid, rather than compress it into a few freeways and then decompress it?

Also, I'm all for moving this discussion to the highway/infrastructure thread. I'd prefer to be talking about buildings again.

Cool. This will be a nice, sensitive addition. I like Kent Sutherland's work.

You could try contacting the City's Land Branch. I thought I read in an article or something that they're the land developer. They may be able to give information on who's building out there.

To the best of my knowledge the city is developing 150-200 additional lots in Parkridge. They are like Echoes said the land developer therefore also selling these lots. As for who will buy these/develop them you would have to wait closer to completion to find this out. I believe they are currently still working on roads but the sanitary/water lines are in place so this wont be too far away.

Indeed the city is developing this land, projecting 173 lots for sale this year. Roads are constructed, Saskpower is working there, SaskEnergy should be starting any day. Land Branch doesn't have this development page on the city's website yet, but once it does I'm sure they will be having lot draws for a few individual lots with the rest of them being sold in bulk to the various builders.

If there is a particular builder you want to build you a home in that neighborhood you should contact them to express your interest.

Gabriel Dumont Institute wants to help improve 22nd Street
Institute plans eventual Métis centre of excellence at 22nd Street location

CBC NewsPosted: Mar 26, 2015 6:30 PM CT | Last Updated: Mar 26, 2015 6:30 PM CT

The Gabriel Dumont Institute wants to bring more beauty and culture to 22nd Street. The Saskatoon campus has been growing according to executive director Geordie McCaffery, with four buildings now along 22nd Street.

In an interview with Leisha Grebinski, host of CBC's Saskatoon Morning, McCaffery outlined GDI's unique approach to expansion.

"We do have a lot of buildings," said McCaffery. "We've taken the strategic approach of acquiring smaller properties, owning and paying them off over time."

McCaffery said spreading the campus out has allowed GDI to experience growth, without needing a big mortgage.

"We buy a building, own it, and then fix it up, renovate it, and make it look really nice," said McCaffery. "(We) improve that student experience and make [our campus] a source of pride for the Métis community and then move on to expand."

Situating a campus along 22nd Street hasn't been without its growing pains. McCaffery said entrances were relocated to the rear of buildings due to safety concerns because of the large volume of traffic on 22nd. But he emphasized that GDI hopes to improve the overall experience along the busy artery.

Dundurn Development Still a Go

Written by Carol Thomson, saskatoonhomepage.ca

Friday, 27 March 2015

Some may wonder if a project as large as a proposed mega wholesale mall could actually be true, but the Mayor of the Town of Dundurn and the Reeve of the Rural Municipality say it's still a go.

A Chinese company has proposed a 155 acre site with 4 convention and exhibition centres in the Dundurn area and 1 international commercial building.

Mayor Doug Narraway says he spoke with the Reeve recently and he says the owners of Brightenview are waiting to see how the changes to the immigrant program will effect the Chinese company, because some of the managers will have to move to Saskatchewan.

He adds that the majority of employees will be Canadian.

The provincial government recently announced changes to the immigrant nominee program.

The site of Brightenview has a sign marking it as such, but not much physical work has been done beyond that.

Narraway says he isn't surprised by the slow pace because it is such a huge project.

Of interest to Contractors and Consultants is the Sask Government's introduction of a new procurement policy. As with everything, the devil is in the details, but it does looks promising. Potential benefits include more work for Saskatchewan-based companies, and the intoduction of evaluating proposals on best value not just low price. All in all, looks like a progressive move.

PROCUREMENT ACTION PLAN INCREASES FAIRNESS AND CONSISTENCY FOR SASKATCHEWAN BUSINESSES

Released on March 27, 2015
The government is taking decisive action through the new Procurement Transformation Action Plan to ensure there is an open, fair and transparent bidding environment for Saskatchewan businesses, and that taxpayers receive best value.

“Our government is committed to ensuring Saskatchewan businesses are treated fairly, respectfully, and consistently,” Minister responsible for SaskBuilds Gordon Wyant said. “We are taking immediate action to ensure there is a level playing field for local businesses and to ensure contracting is strategic so taxpayers get the best possible value.”

The action plan’s initiatives are based on input from more than 140 Saskatchewan businesses, associations, municipalities, colleges and universities, and other government partners.

“The plan looks at procurement from all angles,” Wyant said. “Everything was on the table from simplifying documentation and language, to awarding contracts on best value versus lowest cost, and ensuring we use all available room in the trade agreements to benefit Saskatchewan businesses.”

“This is a bold plan based on Canadian best practices,” Saskatoon Meewasin MLA and Legislative Secretary for Priority Saskatchewan Roger Parent said. “Priority Saskatchewan will lead the implementation of the plan and will continue to consult with Saskatchewan businesses and our broader government partners.”

Priority Saskatchewan, a division of SaskBuilds, was created in June 2014 to lead a cross-government and Crown corporation review of current procurement practices and implementing improvements on an ongoing basis.

Dale MacKay opens Home Slice Pizza Shoppe

By Joelle Tomlinson, Global News

March 30, 2015

SASKATOON – Chef Dale Mackay is venturing into the pizza business with a new restaurant called Home Slice Pizza Shoppe in Saskatoon. The restaurant will feature take out and delivery, and focuses on quality pizza with local ingredients.

“This is a collaborative between me and all the people involved with Ayden, we sat down and decided we want better pizza,” said Mackay. “We’re doing delivery style pizza, and focusing on a more American-style pizza, not the flat crust.”

Pizza seems to be the next bandwagon like Sushi and Frozen Yogurt. Not that I'm complaining though, since I love me some pizza! The Riversdale Deli guys opened their pizza place Capanna because they wanted better pizza as well. Euforia's is also set to open in their new space on 3rd Avenue in April which is exciting. They're definitely my favourite these days--not thin crust, but different from a traditional crust. Hopefully they actually develop a proper menu with pricing so it's not so convoluted ordering and a mystery to what you're paying though

I laughed at/liked Dale taking a shot at some of the other places with their imported flour from Italy and saying that the best flour in the world is right here in Saskatchewan.
