What happened to the proceeds of the sale then? $20,000,000 + does not just evaporate?

They had only ever earmarked $5.6MM as a grant for development of (what the were calling) the James Avenue Parkade. I can only imagine what happened to the remainder of the funds, but I'd rather not. It may have been pledged against something already too. Never know with the city...

[QUOTE=1ajs;6969784]so calvry temps taring down the lukes macheaning building for parking lame![/QUOTE

My understanding is that Hydro bought Calvery temple lot and agreed to purchase Luke's and turn it into a parking lot to replace what was bought for the substation.

I think they bought 97 stalls and replaced it with 156.

My understanding is the downtown bylaw no longer allows demolition for parking lots and it is no longer a permitted use...

Why is the city allowing the demolition of 4 buildings to accommodate even more parking? This is a huge step backwards towards a vibrant down town and urbanism in general. Talk about a suburban response by the City and Hyydro.
Very disappointing ...

^ Brutal. And here I thought the substation would at least do something to reduce the number of surface parking lots along that stretch of Notre Dame.

all four of these buildings are being demolished? one is even a heritage building.

Hydro builds a $300 million green building to promote sustainability then does this?

I'm in disbelief...are we sure about this?

Not that farfetched considering we are talking about the company that apparently thought it was doing the Exchange District a huge favour by proposing the complete gutting and conversion a row of warehouses into the new substation before sanity prevailed.

Unfortunately, plan B is not looking a whole lot better.

But they had to get a demolition permit. The violation of the downtown bylaw would require a vote by council.....how was that not news? Demo hasn't started has it?

F**k I hate the provincial government.

I can't find anything on this. No permits, no meetings - nothing. If it's in fact happening, I'd love to know how any of this can happen without any public review at all...

That probably explains why nothing is out there yet. That's only a couple months ago.

What's the address?

Hopefully someone can figure out what the deal is with this potential new downtown parking lot.

Anyways, to lighten the mood, here's the latest McNeill article - sounds like the medium density infill in Osborne Village is full steam ahead.

Apartment unit in Village firm’s latest success

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion...lage-firms-latest-success-297980161.html

Quote:
Progressive Real Estate is about a month away from completing a 15-unit, three-storey, walk-up apartment building on an infill lot at 320 Stradbrook Ave.

Within the next two months, it plans to start building another similar-sized apartment building on another infill property about a half a block down the street, at 381 Stradbrook.

And next spring it expects to start working on a 32-unit apartment building on an infill property it owns at 378 Wardlaw Ave.

I'll be writing to my councillor about the Calvary Temple thing as should everyone here. It sounds like a plan straight out of the 70s... hard to believe that it could get the green light.
