Yeah, fair enough. They're getting there, although obviously the winning helps sell tickets. I don't think the fanbase is built to weather the storms that might come up in the future, at least not yet.

No because then it would be a true minor feeder league to the NFL. Why not the NFL Canadianise the — out of their game? Why the hell do we ALWAYS have to bow down to the US Behemoth!

We're veering into sports culture stuff here, but what the hell:

What can you really do to "Americanize" the CFL? US expansion was a bust, so that's out... you can get rid of player quotas but all that will do is hurt football development in Canada and have no effect whatsoever on US fan interest.

As well as what the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB can attain. When you are on the very bottom rung of the sports ladder, then by definition your potential for growth is necessarily the highest of all your competitors.

From the Angus Reid Institute (Canada's leading social science firm):

Yes absolutely. I theirs a possibility that they can bend the rules on meeting the Canadian player quotas It's a great thing for Canadian football players however I really don't think a Majority of Canadians care all that much. Its basically the CRTC of the football world.

But to clarify I'm talking about the way it's represented on TV and also the entire image of the CFL is very dated.

I think the League is 10-15 years away from it. As new stadiums continue to be built. TV audience grows, season ticket holders expand, Ticket prices maybe get a little more pricey, More teams get added. Next TV deal Could be massive in comparison. Which all means higher salaries. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd string QB in the NFL would rather have a Starting job for the Ottawa Redblacks at 650k a season vs making 1-3 million and never play. That's when you will see the Game grow significantly

Perhaps, but I was actually daydreaming about the NFL adopting CFL rules...

Ontario numbers are 50% of the national TV rating so said former commish Cohon, you can choose to believe it or not. And I can't see why he would lie because sponsors have access to the ratings book and they would know if he was lying. BTW, TFC lost money last year.

Aside from Ontario where will TFC grow? Quebec, no, western Canada, no, they have teams to support. Nobody in the ROC gives a — about TFC, why would they? The TV numbers show that.

If you would have listened to outgoing commish Cohon and incoming commish Orridge and several team executives, they are extremely cognizant of attracting new and younger fans. That's why Orridge was hired.

Lots of new young fans in the former moribund markets of Hamilton and Ottawa, Toronto can do the same. Blow it up and start from scratch as Ottawa did with committed ownership. No reason the Argos shouldn't make money, MLSE said they would be profitable if they owned them. They just would become a loser on the field like every other MLSE team

I would say you were dead wrong. More American players would lead to an even larger perception of being an American minor league to the NFL. As it stands it is still perceived as a Canadian league.

BMO will likely just be a dead cat bounce. There are fundamental flaws in the market here, many of which were cemented when the Argos lost a whole generation of fans. The Argos still are arrogant thinking that isn't real, the CFL does not want to address it, but that impact is very real and it effects all things of that franchise. Braley was able to cheap out because nobody held him accountable for it. If he tried to do the same in other markets the fans and press would put heat on him.
All the CFL games I attend, during hot summer days, always feature lots of shirtless, boisterous, usually a bit tippsy, young men, and lots of hot young women. Just anecdotal, but thought I would share anyways.

The whole idea of comparing growth potential between TFC/MLS and Argos/CFL is a bit silly because their potential audience and revenue streams are so different. The optimistic 20-year scenario for the Argos is that they're a successful and profitable franchise in a successful CFL that has maybe one or two more teams and gets high TV ratings in Canada. The successful 20-year scenario for TFC (and the Whitecaps and Impact) is that they're teams in a league that's mentioned in the same breath as the EPL and other powerhouse leagues (and make no mistake, that's what MLS is aiming for) and are revenue sharing US and international TV deals in the billions of dollars. US TV deals and international marketing are what drives MLSE to own certain franchise, not canadian viewership. "Growth potential" within the canadian TV context is largely irrelevant.
