Thanks. Makes sense long term. They'll have that whole square block to work with. And would be on the same campus, if you will, as the virology lab. I don't think they really have any interaction, but are both medical type facilities.

Bowman 'supportive' of True North project at committee meeting

Brian Bowman appears to have altered his public stance towards the $400-million downtown project proposed by True North Sports & Entertainment.

Bowman spoke glowingly of the project at Wednesday’s executive policy committee meeting, saying he’ll support it if it proves beneficial to the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

"If we’re talking about a $400-million development in downtown Winnipeg, we should all be supportive of seeing such a sizeable development happen in our downtown," Bowman said during the meeting.

Bowman’s comments appear as a complete reversal for the harsh tone he used two months ago to describe the business arrangement between True North and CentreVenture, describing it as secretive and improper.

No surprise, changed his tune in a hurry..

Not sure that commentary is particularly fair. Saying we should be supportive of a $400MM downtown project isn't really a reversal of saying the arrangement to come to it was secretive and improper. You can believe both things.

Yeah, the Free Press is gloating as though the editorial board was right all along and Bowman has somehow just realized that. Gimme a break.

It's funny how on one hand the Free Press is calling for audits and investigations in just about every major project or deal that the city was involved in over the last 10 years, but on the other hand they are slamming Bowman for daring to question the cozy arrangement between CV and Chipman.

I still think the issue with True North Square was never with the plan itself but the process behind the handling of the 220 Carlton site.

The only public solicitations for proposals for 220 Carlton required a hotel meeting very specific criteria (national chain, offering points, minimum of four stars). True North then put forward a proposal to develop that same site without meeting those criteria. CentreVenture then accepted that offer and agreed to exclusively work with them before opening up the discussion to anyone else who pay have had alternate proposals for 220 Carlton which did not include a hotel. This agreement for land that is owned by the City of Winnipeg is outside the normal processes designed to limit the appearance that favouritism may have occurred.

It does seem to have a theme that is somewhat one sided.

Don't have the link but apparently Bowman's not adverse to offering tax incentives for the project either, discussed on CJOB I believe.

It still seems he has done a reversal on his position, regardless of the reporting the FREEP is doing on the situation?

A local developer hopes to breathe new life into South Point Douglas by redeveloping a sprawling trucking compound into an urban campus featuring retail and office space and some new apartments or condos.

Would this be the residential building that he's talking about in the article?

Bob Brown said there's another building facing onto Waterfront Drive that would be ideally suited as a residential complex, since it's across the street from several other new condo and apartment complexes either built or under construction.
That would be a nice one to get some housing into. It's across from Wpg Architect's buildings as well as YouCube, it could really increase the population on the north side of Waterfront Drive.

^ The stars are aligning nicely for them if they're serious about their plan. No one in their right mind would have considered that site for a development like that 15 years ago, but Waterfront has slowly matured into a pleasant urban neighbourhood... it's no surprise that the northern end of the drive would go through that transition.

It does seem as though the stretch of SPD between Disraeli and the river is primed to become basically a northern extension of the Exchange District. In other words, a vital and growing part of the CBD, with new residents and business activity.

I am a little scared of their use of the word "campus" and wondering exactly what it entails. Not 100% sure why but I assume the steveosnyder's and rgalston's of the world would also be concerned.

^ Yeah, fair enough. Devil's in the details, but in general the concept sounds positive.

Nice looking development for Waterfront drive. It is almost like the old Winnipeg is becoming the new Winnipeg.
I wonder if there might be some potential synergies with the Neeginen Traing Centre on Higgins, which is a quiet success story in that area.

Speaking of the Free Press, anyone else think they are slowly killing their own brand by following the New York Times model for their paywall?

I fully understand the need to monetize web traffic to pay for content creation, but I think the Free Press should really take a step back and consider what they are doing. They aren't the New York Times. There are no more than a few thousand people on the planet who will pay to read Lawless, Sinclair, Kives etc. By forcing people to have an account, free or not, just to view their site they are going to be redirecting a lot of their web traffic to the Sun, CTV Winnipeg, CBC, Global and blogs.

The newspapers make it seem as though they've lost tons of money because of declining circulation, but I wonder how much of their profits actually came from hard copy sales? I was always under the impression that the price you paid covered the overhead in terms of getting the paper to you, and the real money was in the ads which the WFP clearly still has a lot of either online or in the paper version.

But yeah, I'd wager that most people will simply get their news fix from other local sources... the Sun has a paywall, but CBC has a decent website where you can get basic local news for free. Like it or not, there is a whole generation that has grown up without paying to receive news, and I doubt that they're going to suddenly start because they can't live without Gordon Sinclair Jr.

That said, I'll probably get a digital subscription (I have a Saturday only sub right now) even though I find it ridiculous that the Free Press doesn't have an Android app... there are more Android users than iOS users.

Declining circulation doesn't hurt too much in terms of subscription revenue, but the rate they can charge advertisers depends on it. The fact that newspaper classifieds are basically obsolete is a big blow to the old model too.

In this day and age, I'm of the opinion that it is better to have your content viewed by more people than to have it viewed by a relatively small group of people who are willing to pay, unless there is so much demand for the content that you won't lose the majority of your audience with a paywall. I think the Free Press is more than a little smug, reading Samyn on this issue really drives that home, and not correctly identifying their competitors in the information market. Samyn essentially says they have no competition.

I wouldn't consider what the Sun has a paywall. If you delete your browsing history it resets and you can view 10 articles for free again.

"Campus" does make it sound really inward looking, as if it's not going to interface well with the neighborhood around it in an attempt to block it out.
