Why on earth would Publix lease a second location only four blocks away from their existing Midtown store?

I don't know if Publix would go there but it makes sense that they were trying to attract a grocer to occupy that space. The size of the space would probably be more suited for something like a Sprouts or Trader Joe's.

I heard that the ground floor of the building was being specifically designed for a Publix. The one in Plaza Midtown is always busy, and there are literally thousands of new apartments coming to the immediate area this year, with thousands more in the next few years. It's not unheard of; for example in Miami there are three Publix within a 6-block area in Brickell, and a pair of Publix just two blocks apart in Miami Beach. St.Petersberg also has a set of Publix just 3 blocks apart. If the demand is there, they'll build.

It can happen. I remember when Kroger had two stores across the street from each other in Brookhaven.

Its funny that I was thinking about Miami Beach when the idea of another Publix going there came up but I think that situation is kind of unique.

There is definitely a market for more grocery options in Midtown and I just read that Publix was developing a new smaller urban store format. I just thought that some of the other grocers that typically have stores about exactly the size of this space would be eager to get into this market. If it is a Publix though, its doubtful that it will have all the glass shown in the renderings along the 6th street. I do love the way this project is so thoughtfully designed and it irritates me that some of the other projects on much larger sites insist on incorporating deck entrances on the busier streets, especially Azure on the Park.

A bit more from the Business Chronicle article...

Related is planning to break ground in the third quarter on 22 14th street which is phase one of the project. A Related representative indicated that they would love to have Whole Foods but there are also other options available.

Publix in Plaza Midtown is about 33,000 sqft. So this is similar.

There appears to be some kind of site work going on at Post Millennium site so it looks like groundbreaking is imminent.

Midtown is on such a roll right now. Despite all of the residential development, job growth within the core was a bit of a concern I had for a while but no more. It has a chance to really become the urban 'hood many of us have always dreamed of it becoming.

‘Not your father’s office building’ planned for Atlantic Station

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/print...ather-s-office-building-planned-for.html

Quote:
Real estate developer Hines plans to build a 220,000-square-foot development at Atlantic Station targeted at technology companies and others who seek “creative” office space.
Hines’ seven-story development, described as a new “old” office building, will be located on a 1-acre parcel, currently a surface parking lot, near the Millennium Gate on 17th Street, according to a document filed with the City of Atlanta. Hines declined comment.

A similar development in Minneapolis

Cousins/Hines, Portman vie for huge Georgia Tech project

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/print...s-portman-vie-for-huge-georgia-tech.html

Quote:
Two longtime Atlanta real estate companies known for some of the most recognizable buildings on the city skyline are competing to develop a $300 million mixed-use project for Georgia Tech — the next expansion of Midtown’s Technology Square.

Cousins Properties Inc. is vying against Portman Holdings to develop the project. Cousins has also teamed with Houston-based powerhouse Hines.
The new project would rise over Tech Square on the site that housed the Crum & Forster building at 4th and Spring streets. It would add up to 750,000 square feet of new development to Tech Square, including a new 600,000-square-foot office building.

Wood Partners presents plan for Phipps area high-rise

http://buckheadview.com/2015/03/25/wood-partners-seeks-to-downsize-phipps-area-high-rise-plan/

Quote:
In what has become an extremely rare move in Buckhead apartment project developments, Wood Partners has presented a plan to reduce the size of a planned high-rise residential tower at 1000 Park Avenue, across from Phipps Plaza, from 40 stories to 27.

The nearly 2-acre site is next to 750 Park Avenue, which Kusmiersky previously developed and is one of Buckhead’s tallest buildings. Wood Partners now has the 1000 Park Avenue site under contract.

$300 Million for a 24 story building? Has the scope and size of this project changed since it was first reported?

It's good that it isn't. Those lots are more suited for highrises.

Not that we know of. Remember that this is not just an office building. The data center itself will be nearly 300,000 SF which is equivalent to a small office building and is obviously more costly to build than just standard office space. The proton therapy center costs over $200 million with no tower.

Based on the info from the latest ABC, the data center is only 60 - 80K SQF. The physical office portion is 600K and the rest retail or some other use. $300 Million still sounds extremely high.

Georgia Tech will put itself on an even larger stage with its latest expansion of Tech Square, which includes a 60,000 to 80,000 high performance computing center. The entire mixed-use project is expected to draw international interest. It already landed Stuttgart, Germany-based RIB Software AG, which plans to relocate its North American Headquarters to the development.
