I don't see why anyone wants to justify NIMBYism, especially for the wrong reasons. Cut and cover is doable and should be acceptable for Broadway, and there are far denser cities with far busier roadways that dealt with cut and cover and still manage to do okay (i.e. San Francisco).
Unless of course there is some "special" reason why they should be treated differently...

I think he was just referring to the station excavations. I'd be surprised if you could just plank over the entire length of the street, and continue to carry the huge amount of buses and cars that use it right now. And there'd still be a period where you'd need to do the "cutting," which wouldn't be all that short. And pedestrians wouldn't want to walk on sidewalks, if they were kept open, right beside big construction pits.
I wish we could do it to stretch out our money (maybe help bring it closer to UBC

) but I just don't think it's feasible. The Arbutus corridor I think is perfect for cut and cover however. Either way it's a moot point, because the city said they won't allow any more cut and cover on existing roads.
