Yeah, agreed.

*****

Some shots via Downtown St. John's (our downtown development corporation).

Reel Downtown (they play movies along Water Street during the summer/fall).

Christmas Parade on Water Street.

And on Duckworth.

Traditionally, Santa arrives at the parade on a helicopter. That's how you know it's about to begin as you're standing around downtown talking about how cold you are with everyone else.

During the construction of 351.

Inside City Hall.

Some pretty scenery.

There's also the Miss Rose of Tralee, who competes in Ireland.

And a couple of other aerials...

And one of the coolest little hidden cafes in the city, in the central courtyard of the Murray Premises.

Really interesting place though. I find all of those tiny, isolated islands of the North Atlantic quite fascinating - like the Faroe Islands or Svalbard. Or really, any isolated, sparely inhabited islands anywhere. Like Saint Helena, the Falklands, Bermuda, or pretty much anywhere in the South Pacific. Or slightly more populated examples including the likes of Iceland, Cape Verde, Madeira, the Azores, or...Newfoundland?

I'd love to visit St. Pierre. It's interesting, isolated, and rugged looking, but my reaction upon seeing those photos is that it looks kind of plain compared to a lot of towns in the Maritimes and New England.

I think Newfoundland doesn't have a lot of towns that look like that simply because it didn't have a lot of towns back when people were still building cutesy buildings. Its settlement was organized differently because its economy was mostly based around fishing, with the partial exception of the capital. St. Pierre is another little administrative centre too. In other regions that had earlier industry and agriculture there were more small towns.

Plain is perhaps a good word for SPM if that's how you'd describe clapboard.

BUT - and I've no idea why it's not as overwhelming in pictures - there are so many little urban touches that are really striking in person. The guardrails are beautiful. Almost feel like Japan. The central streets have no traffic lights but instead use mirrors on the buildings. European traffic signs.

Somehow it just spices everything up enough that I don't think you could leave considering it plain.

How often do Orcas come into the harbour? Surprising.

I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out how "2015" was suspended in the air. Ugh.

Gorgeous city. Flawless city, as always.

So, in honour of Paddy's Day, a little tour of found photos of some of my favourite communities around the island - the ones I think actually look good (and they're a minority. We're a province of suburbia).

Signal, your photos make me want to visit Newfoundland (and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon). Well not entirely true... they reinforce my desire to visit there because those NL tourism videos already did the trick years back.

It's so cold today that the protest had very poor turnout. Only a few dozen at its peak. But still nice for a little run around the National War Memorial area.
