Right back at you, HossC . . . you did an amazing job on the 1899 LA panorama!

Your Weatherby's photos are of this Weatherby: http://www.weatherby.com/company/history.html

If you watch the video at the link above, there's a shot at about the 6:20 mark of the Weatherby's store that you posted.

2781 Firestone Blvd. is in South Gate, and Wikipedia has Weatherby originally in South Gate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weatherby

Wikipedia also has this link to a 1951 Popular Mechanics article about Weatherby in South Gate: http://books.google.com/books?id=49g...epage&q&f=true

Weatherby is now HQ'd up in Paso Robles.

Wow, CityBoyDoug, the Man from Mars article you linked really brought back memories! My parents did their grocery shopping at that Boys Market when we lived in Rosemead 1950-54.

And while I'm here, I found this link on Crawford's El Monte for ER:

http://crawfordselmonte.blogspot.com/

We'd occasionally shop there as well.

Henry.....Everyone was really spooked when we heard about the robberies. It gave us kids visions of how crazy the world can be. It was very unsettling. I went to McKinley school which was just several blocks from the Boy's Market [which is now the Hawaii Asian Supermarket].

My father didn't shop at Crawford's, he preferred more modern stores such as Von's. The Crawford's stores were very old fashioned and definitely ''country''. I'd go to Crawford's occasionally because I liked their magazine section.

Thanks for the links Flyingwedge. I couldn't resist posting this night shot that you highlighted in the video. The stars aren't real, but the neon looks great.

I found Dale's Beauty Salon in the 1960 CD. It was at 8114 Seville Avenue, South Gate (8114 is visible on the sign). I think the "EMP..." blade sign that's visible over the left end of the streetcar belonged to the Wilma Mitchell Agency and said "EMPLOYMENT". Here are the other likely contenders for stores in the picture from the 1960 CD:

8112 Seville Av SGt Mitchell Wilma Agcy emplymnt. LU 7-3126
8112 Seville Av SGt Test Data Inc......LU 7-3129
8112 Seville Av SGt Wilma Mitchell Agency LU 7-3126
8114 Seville AvSGt Dale's Beauty Salon.LUd 1-9264
8116 Seville SGt Calif State of agriculture dept of Meat Insoection Field Ofc.LUd 7-8101
8116 Seville SGt Calif State of agriculture dept of Weights & Measures Bureau of. LUd 7-2318
8120 Seville Av SGt Johnny's Geni Merchandise LU 5-1014
8120 Seville Av So Calif Gas Co South Gate appliance sales information. MA 5-3211
8120 Seville Av So Calif Gas Co South Gate customer serv calls. MA 5-3331
8122 Seville Av SGt Miles Appliances .. LUd 7-4575
8124 Seville Av SGt Jimmy's New Cafe. .LUd 7-8610

Today, the whole block is a parking lot.

"Distribution Lines. -Area view of Sunset Boulevard, showing joint pole construction and the Pacific Electric Railway, 1912."

http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/landin...on/p15150coll2

above: That 1003 on the right isn't a street number. I believe it's the number of the photograph (written by the photographer in white ink).

below: This is the same photograph....the view further down the road.

I'm not familiar with Elza Avenue. -note the billboards on the left.

Here's Elza Avenue on the 1910 Baist map. At the time, it looks like it didn't connect with Sunset.

www.historicmapworks.com

Four years later, and two years after e_r's picture, Elza Avenue loops its way down to Sunset

www.historicmapworks.com

I found Elza Avenue on a 1928 map, but at some point it became Westerly Terrace. Several of the other streets in this area have also been renamed over the last 100 years.
NB. I've rotated this image to match the Baist maps.

Google Maps

Here's an updated view along Sunset Boulevard. I'm guessing that this is near to the original location. I actually went back to 2011 to get the Googlemobile near the center of the street.

Found this pic of some demolition at Union Station, in preparation of Metrolink & the Red Line. And can't wrap my head around what it could be. Obviously, it is most likely on the backside of the station.

Still unsure as to how to post pics from flickr on the site.

Something Unearthed At Union Station by emd111, on Flickr
I fixed the code.

The description says it was taken on June 30, 1991. Both Google Earth and Historic Aerials have images for 1994, but neither has enough clarity to exactly identify the location. The image below is taken from the service road that now runs parallel to Metrolink station. The building in the foreground is the same as the one above.

GSV

Spinning around 180 degrees you get this view. Looking at the distance between the camera and the foreground building in the original image, I'd say the camera was roughly where the Metrolink platform or tracks are now.

Jann's Investment.

This building looks like a church. I wonder if they did this on purpose. Yes, I am rather cynical when it comes to things like this.

True that, but one could argue it was loosely based on a roman temple, which later became a church and became a church prototype. Have also heard the building likened to a wee bit 'o Monticello and various capitols. Like it or not, I think the idea was to start with something substantial. Let us pray . . . for more parking.

I was curious as to what was at this location now, so I looked on Google Maps
(211 N. Figueroa is shown by the "A")

The area I outlined in red looked familiar, so I took a closer look.

Google Maps

This is the area we discussed a while back. It is on N. Freemont Avenue. The roadbed led up to Court Circle and the stairs used to go up to houses.

I took another look at the area behind the gas station on the 1931 photo.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co.../17705/rec/262

Are these stairways, and the road behind them, the same ones that were left behind next to the 110 Freeway? The location looks pretty close.

What do you guys think?

FredH's original post of Foy's gas station at 211 N. Figueroa deserves a closer look. After all there was a price war. Dust? I'll have my gas syphoned through a sock, please.

Drive in please. Drive out pleased.

For a 1916 poster it's remarkable how much more recent the "typical one-story home" looks, as if it were a 1950s stucco tract house.

With regard to Prohibition, it's interesting how some districts like Palms and Hollywood were Dry as independent communities, then became Wet on being annexed to the City of L.A., and then went Dry again with the advent of national Prohibition.
