That sea of grid looks a lot like Montreal's inner neighborhoods. The downtown west is mostly rowhouses like the snowy street visible in the pic right below it?

The street in this photo is further out (in the Junction area - not visible in that aerial view), and more typical of those developed in the early 1900s. The residential streets to the west (and the east) of the core were built up in late 1800s and look more like this: https://maps.google.ca/maps?ll=43.655034...T-8tzWcIbce7Qd-1fA&cbp=13,173.05,,0,0.18

More or less the same scale, but the older ones just look a little nicer of course. They're also denser, but that's because more of the homes are multi-family than because of any significant increase in built density.

Not a part of Canada but closer to both of us than we are to each other.

A few recent uploads from St-Pierre-et-Miquelon, France, off the south coast of Newfoundland.

It is a constant source of shame what they've managed to do with the same building blocks we had. This would easily be the second-most urban community in Newfoundland if it were ours, despite being... I think not even in OUR Top 10 (and you can imagine how pathetically small in population that is).

No, it's a separate building. I like that too. Everybody tends to obsess about building heights but the first few floors and the size of the frontage and overall footprint are much more important.

Developers of course like to consolidate lots and build things with huge footprints.
