Alstom? They would be an obvious choice as they made them and also have the maintenance contract for the Confederation Line rolling stock until 2048.

I think this is a separate contract since the confederation line train maintenance contract will be ATU members but not current city of Ottawa OC Transpo ATU 279 maintenance workers.

If you know what I mean.

I'm pretty sure the contract went to Bombardier again. I know they're Alstom trains, but Bombardier's rail services division is growing, including staffing GO Transit and UP Express, as well as a few US railways. I have no proof of this and was a little unsure myself, but last week I spotted Bombardier staff riding one of the Talents, when surely the new contract would have started by then. My suspicions were all but confirmed when one of the media photos on Monday morning showed a person I know to be a Bombardier employee looking back out the cab window of a LINT.

RailTerm is the other contractor for the O-Train, handling track and signal maintenance and rail traffic control. OCTranspo does very little for the O-Train in house.

A coworker of mine told me that in Toronto incidents like this happen almost every day on the subway, but they're able to deal with them in a few minutes. I got off the previous train at Greenboro. From what I gathered, as the door was closing or after it was closed, a customer "hulk pried" the door open again. The train then couldn't leave, as the door or it's switches had become mis-aligned and the door was closing too far, triggering the sensitive edge. Of course the Bombardier techs were riding the next train, which then got stuck waiting at Brookfield. There were 3 drivers working on the problem at Greenboro, but they couldn't fix it even with radio instructions from techs on the next train. The delay was due to waiting for a Bombardier tech to drive to Greenboro and fix the issue. It was about 30 minutes of delay in total.

I'd imagine incidents like this will go away once drivers learn all of the tricks of the new trains, but for the meantime they do have Bombardier tech out riding the trains and are trying to get them as spread out as possible to fix issues as they occur. They're also being very vigilant regarding people charging the doors as they close now, with instructions to report time and location of any incidents.

Getting this city's people to have good train IQ is actually one of the things the city plans for the Confederation Line. The space that would normally be used for advertisements in the stations are going to be used for how-to PSAs instead, for the first 5 years after opening. Things like "Stand on the right, walk on the left" posted at escalators, for example.

Good luck with that, if people's bus etiquette, elevator etiquette, escalator etiquette, sidewalk etiquette, etc., is anything to go on.

Canadians tend to be pretty bad at this sort of stuff, however Ottawans are bad even by Canadian standards.

IMO, the city should probably enforce proper escalator etiquette at Confederation Line stations with fines. People in Ottawa are horrible with escalators. People seem to be completely unaware of 'stand on the right', they stand all over the place and make it impossible for those of us in a hurry to walk down. Even worse, there's plenty of people who stand exactly in the middle and hold both arms out to the handles thus making the escalator effectively single file

It's a major annoyance at malls, but at Confederation Line stations it will be a massive efficiency killer, enough to warrant bylaws.

It's night and day when you go to England, where it's not only normal, but expected, for people to get violently shoved out of the way for blocking those wanting to walk down the escalator, or New York City, where those walking slowly down the middle of the sidewalk are bound to get trampled.

You been to Canada? People never bother to ask those slowing them down on escalators or sidewalks to move out of the way. They just grumble under their breath. Hence why we need a PR campaign for the Confederation Line stations, to keep the flow of people on the escalators as efficient as possible.

I was running for the train at Carleton today, and didn't think I would make it, as the people running ahead of me pressed the button and nothing happened. Then I noticed them run to the other door which was still open. Sure enough, someone had hit it and the door was stuck open about half way on it's tracks. After a minute, the buzzer sounded and the door closed automatically.

Apparently the LINTs have a much more finicky sensitive edge. I don't think the Talents have a sensitive edge at all, the door would just open again if there was resistance.

Finally got a chance to ride on Saturday. Seemed like an unusually long wait to depart Greenboro, and there was a wierd halt on approach to Bayview (the southbound train had long gone), but otherwise, the passings were flawless, and the new gear rides way smoother than the Talents.

Saying "Excuse me" does not work because even if they do move, they have a fifty-fifty chance or moving to the right.

I agree that we need a public campaign to teach Canadians how to use escalators, people movers, and even stairs and sidewalks.

"Slower traffic keep right!"

And just because the escalator or people over is moving doesn't mean you come to a stop. Get some exercise and keep moving!

Toronto had the "stand right-walk left" signs on subway escalators until a few years ago, but they removed them all. The reason was that they want to discourage people from walking on escalators, I suppose due to risk of injury.
