Nope. At the open house they said the existing passarelle will be removed.

When I was at the open house, I asked the same guy:
- About the trolley wires and what will still be served by the existing bus loop
- About the existing Passarelle
- About the location of where buses will stop on Central Blvd

Now it's also possible that the person I spoke to wasn't actually prepared for questions about the trolley wires, but the Passarelle and the bus stops he had prepared answers for.

He's talking about the path (that's currently blocked off) attached to the mall that's over the length of the bus loop - not the one from the station to the mall. It's missing in the picture I quoted.

Worst case scenario is we get a repeat of the walkway over kingsway that goes over the road but isn't connected to the mall for whatever reason. Instead you get a weirdly placed group of TVM's and faregates, plus one wall that's just a chainlink fence.

I think that's just mall property (though which, Station Square, or Metropolis) Since Station Square is still undergoing redevelopment, there's probably no plans to connect it until there is something actually to connect to.

2.0 METROTOWN SKYTRAIN STATION IMPROVEMENTS CONTEXT

The passerelle is one of several components of a conceptual approach for improvements related to the Metrotown Skytrain Station that were determined through a Transit Village Study for Metrotown under the Urban Transportation Showcase Program, which was jointly funded by Translink, the federal government and the City of Burnaby. This conceptual approach was approved in principle by Council on 2007 October 15. The main improvement components include: a redesigned station roof and enclosure; an extended station platform; a new west station house accessing grade; a new bus transit exchange and a new civic square; a rebuilt east station house with level access (handicapped) to the passerelle; a new upgraded passerelle; a mezzanine elevated walkway from the re-built east station house to a new mid-station house where new elevators are to be located; and a possible second passerelle from Metropolis to the mid-station house. This conceptual approach would be pursued, detailed and resolved through a future rezoning application. It is expected that Translink will be making a rezoning application in the near future.

As noted, the upgrading of the passerelle to increase its capacity and make it handicapped accessible and to achieve its funding through cost sharing between the subject developer, Ivanhoe Cambridge, the City of Burnaby, and TransLink was approved in principle by Council through the Public Hearing report of 2003 April in conjunction with the rezoning of Metrotower III, Rezoning Reference #02-27, Phase III.

Yes, I was talking about the passsarelle from Metropolis to Station Square.

Also, for the passarelle from Metropolis to the station, I hope they remove just the part to the station, not the part from Metropolis to the stairs down to Central Blvd. That part is still useful, and as you guys say, it holds up the trolley wires.

The rendering doesn't show the complete Metrotown Station overpass connection to the rebuilt connector between the two malls as that part (the layout, architecture, planning, and construction) will probably have to be deliberated on still...

I mean, TransLink has to talk with Burnaby, Anthem, and Ivanhoe to get this connection properly in place... and anytime there is more than one party involved, each of whom is equal in their authority and rights and can enforce them through the use of the courts, things move at a glacial pace as each party tries to avoid stepping on the toes of another...

A lot of misunderstanding too. There are people who think the work should be done just like it was for Main Street - like that hasn't been inconvenient. Or 'oh just put in a temp construction elevator' - I doubt they'd get the permits for one (those things aren't available to the general public). In this case I think they're doing the best they can. They already added a second shuttle for strollers.

I could throw a stone off Metrotown's platform and it would land on Patterson's roof.

(Okay, it might not land on the roof but you get the idea)

I don't see the fuss about walking three extra minutes when you aren't bothering to take the shuttle.

It's about a 10 min walk. That's a problem for people with mobility issues.

While I could foresee the conniptions people with kids in strollers were going to have, I didn't have a problem with them having to walk from Patterson (which they don't have to do now that TransLink added a shuttle for them).

Main Street was a pain in the —.

I took the train every day, and Broadway was a mess. It was a constant fight for staff to get everyone off the shuttle train that it backed up all the trains leaving downtown and caused gridlock on the platforms.

I can't imagine what it would be like if short trains turned around at Metrotown. Main street is virtually unused compared to Metrotown.

Besides, that elevator was so friggin slow! I think it will actually be faster for people to get off at Patterson and take the shuttle than use the Metrotown Elevator (with less urine smell).

I was going to take some pics of Main Street - Science World Station renos today but there doesn't look to be any substantial differences to see from when I did that previous post about a month ago. I took these pics of a rendering on the fence on Main St. I hadn't seen this one before.

Presumably, the column trees and the truss on the west side of the new roof will support the Expo station truss
(which currently relies on the Safeway wall for support)

All done with this part and waiting for the next phase. Click on the link to officedweller's post at the top to see all the renderings.

I'm curious to know how they modified the building. It kind of looks like they must have pre-built the new back wall inside the building before they started the demolition.

Interesting, that wasn't my experience. I also took the Main Street shuttle daily and it went pretty smoothly IMO.

That would make sense - and explain how it appeared so quickly in [near] pristine condition.
