Probably due to soil contamination in the area. Elevating Hurdman minimizes the amount of ground that is displaced for construction, which in turn minimizes cleanup requirements.

With heavy transfer traffic here, though, this configuration is far superior. Clearly they don't cheap out on absolutely everything!

I believe that's exactly the case. Cheaper to dump a bunch of earth on top than decontaminate the surface.

In the Request for Proposals, the stations were specified as covered. If that was what was asked for, that should have been a minimum deliverable.

A number of reasons come to mind:

- the land use to be a landfill so you really don't want to dig into the earth or costs will sky rocket for remediation
- the land to the north of the station is classified by the NCC as slated for development of national significance and TOD by the city
> the design plans leave a significant gap in the above grade ROW to the right of the station to thread an road to this future property
- the line has to grade up anyways to go over riverside dr. this smoothes out the grades from the Lees trench to the above grade overpass of riverside drive while still allowing for 120 meter (eventually) station between

- I also wonder, as I've noticed the plan calls for a massive gap that punches straight through the station, directly centre after the station is extended to 120m. A gap wide enough for say, an LRT platform to be built at grade connecting the south east by rail. Future proofing??

I believe it is to transfer LRT-bus transfer. The bus platforms will be beneath the LRT platforms.

How is that future proofing when a train has nowhere to go if one ever went through there. This city can't even envision a train going across to Gatineau and plan for it at Bayview, what makes you think it would be somehow enlightened here?

Yeah, I've also considered that. That's a good point- the city has not adequately planned for how the Trillium Line would access the yard & maintenance shed or what will happen to the southeast transit way. I went pouring over the reports on the confederation line website to see if there are any hints about why such a large gap exists there when the pedestrian flows will be highest to the left of this entrance but found little hints except for one diagram that marks it with a triangle, seemingly alluding to it's evolving purpose. (or maybe public art location) But the large gap seems intriguing as it appears to be a 'defined envelope' for something more then what is needed.

The city planning requires that Hurdman be built so that any development at the NCC lands to the north is able to built right up and interconnected to the station.

See also the large temporary plaza at Tunney's Pasture that will eventually be TOD'd.

It just seems to be another place holder plaza.

Edit:

I also think there is almost zero likely hood that the Prince of Wales bridge will be used for LRT. If it is used for transit it will be a BRT connection to Bayview by STO. The question is, are going to have an maintenance shed for every single line we build?

^^^ Is it my imagination or does Lyon Station look a lot "narrower" than Parliament or Rideau ???

You're not crazy, that photo shows one of the "drifts" that the station is excavated in. Basically they make five separate cuts, one each for the top of each side of the arch, one down the middle of the arch, and then two across the bottom, deepening it out. There was a diagram of this a while back. What you're looking at in the picture is the top right cut of the overall shape, which is why it is more curved on the right side of the picture. If you look, the Rideau cavern doesn't look very tall, this is because the bottom two drifts remain to be cut out. In addition, the upper left drift remains in front of the roadheader.

That said, the Confederation Line stations as currently rendered are either comparable to, or better than, stations in Edmonton (which has harsher winter weather than us), Calgary (ditto), and Vancouver (where it rains a lot). They're also better than our current Transitway stations.
I've visited AB in winter, and don't think Calgary and Edmonton uses as much salt as we do. It's either so cold that salted snow/ice doesn't melt, or the warm Chinook winds melts some. I also remember seeing human road crews chipping at ice on the pavement in Calgary!

The photo of Parliament station is a tunnel section, the station caverns are wider and taller and get excavated in "drifts" since the roadheaders have limited reach. Depending on the geology of the station location, they do it in different order. Here's an example diagram, the photo for Lyon seems to reflect the top shape of drift #1, so it should be more than twice as wide in the end.

"I still don't get the reason why a lot of the stations are not roofed over."

The're not even properly walled around.
Typical of current OC-Transpo stations, like Hurdman, St-Laurent, Blair, Billings Bridge, ...

That would apply to Calgary, but not to Edmonton. Edmonton doesn't get chinooks.

Both cities, while they are very cold (Edmonton colder than Ottawa, Calgary would be if you left out the chinooks), are still above the minimum temperature for salting, which is -18C. In all three cities (Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa), daytime temperatures very rarely fall below that and nighttime temperatures typically stay above it too.

Both Calgary and Edmonton have much drier winters. Average snowfall in January for Calgary is 15 cm, Edmonton is 25, and Ottawa is more than double at 54 cm. We salt because of precipitation, not the cold. I don't think they get much freezing rain out west either.

They're going to have to salt and grit the platforms if they don't have defrosters on them. it will get into the trains, the escalators and pit the flooring. It will be a matter of years for the stations to look like s#!t just like the Transitway stations

Do any rapid transit stations ever look nice? I mean, Montreal's metro has some great art on the walls but the platforms are still really grimy. Toronto, ditto just without the great art on the walls! I got the same experience in the London Underground.

Keeping all the stations pristine is probably a lost cause.

I guess they think we're suckers for punishment in winter.

Does anyone use as much friggin' road salt as Ottawa?
