And one other sad one...

This building on Rawlin's Cross was constructed in a (at the time) modern style:

(Vintage St. John's)

But eventually forced to adhere (poorly) with our strict heritage regulations:

What a different city we'd be today if we'd continued to in-fill following urban principles so well. Unfortunately, we quickly started squeezing in suburban-style developments anywhere we could. Up to and including drive-through coffee shops.

The building above looks a thousand times better, what were they thinking? Those that forced 'heritage' regulations need to take a cold shower.

You can imagine my nostalgia for articles like this.

And we still do:

The Church Lad's Brigade Armoury. It's less than a block from my house. It burned down... but the fancy entranceway (which is stone, despite appearances) survived and the new, replacement CLB building was built around it.

I found a number of old Calgary photos that I am certain have never been posted on here before (on a side note: I'm noticing a fair number of reposts, not saying from whom or of where).

Man, Nexen/NOVA is such an awesome tower. The Husky twins would have come up very shortly after this pic.

Also, I posted your 1975 photo two pages ago

and flipped your 197x pic if you want to edit it in - see http://i.imgur.com/KEKHCt9.jpg

Not really a skyline, but here's a photo of part of South End Halifax (Schmidtville) from circa 1890. The Forrest Building, the pointy one in the background, is still there, as Sacred Heart, the larger building on the right. The large building closer to the foreground was a provincial exhibition building and was demolished a long time ago.

Worked in a different browser.

I ended up falling in love with this little square when I was in QC last summer. Spending the evening drinking on the patio at the pizza restaurant in the corner was perfect. Bought a few water colors from a street vendor...It was hard finding something that showed the square.

That last QC one is paradise. And all of them are spectacular.

A few new ones from Vintage St. John's.

1850s - reconstruction following the Great Fire of 1846. Not as severe as the 1892 one but only because the city was smaller. The entire downtown was still destroyed.

1907

I wish we still did suburbs like this. 1911.

1942. Blackout rules. The Nazis torpedoed St. John's and Bell Island, killing 60 in the latter.

They also sunk the ferry linking NL and Canada and are suspected of setting several deadly fires in St. John's. They also installed a weather station on the coast of Labrador.

And a then/now with absolutely no improvement and barely any change lol.
