But steering this back on topic, that building is hideous.

Really? It struck me as very attractive just on first glance. After seeing some negative comments I stared at it for a while to try to figure out why anyone would dislike it. All I can come up with is that you might be seeing the design for how it would look in real life, whereas I'm only looking at an illustration that obviously looks nothing like the way it would appear in any lighting at any time of day or year, in Austin. It looks like something that would be in suburban Seattle, so if that's your objection then I think maybe I get it.

Speaking of roof thing...does anyone remember that bazaar roof thing some architect on crack was proposing for the Capitol Tower a while back? I was having trouble posting the pic but I was able to make it my avatar so you can see what I'm referring to. Soooo glad that didn't happen, but we still have issues with some poorly designed roof toppers here...Ashton, Austonian, Four Seasons. But at least Atlanta is the one getting the GH Apartment design with the suicidal rooftop ski slope.

Yes, I commented on it that I assume it's for solar panels. This affects my judgment of the aesthetics because I value functional form. I like the aesthetics of older industrial designs as well, and am very happy that the Seaholm smokestacks were preserved. Eliminating all traces of physical productivity is the purview of shopping malls, not great cities. Austin is a fairly suburban-looking city in that there is an absence of visible means of support. (I'm totally improvising here, I've never even thought about this before now, so I could change my mind at any minute.)

Getting back on track, the point is that I happen to like the way solar paneling looks, in most cases.

Do you mean that kind of ultimate eyebrow thing. I guess that plan (which was to be a condo conversion?) thankfully fell through. I am glad to see" the eyebrow" fade back into obscurity. It is a most unpleasant decorative flourish that does not age well on other buildings. Maybe it will seem different to folks in the years to come, but I kind of doubt it.

For what it's worth, I check the building permit activity on some of the biggest but not yet started projects periodically to see if there is any movement. Here's a list of projects and the most recent date of any building permit activity. Most of the dates are line item updates to what I guess could be called the Completeness Check.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that schwingy roof thingy has nothing to do with a solar panel. It's some desperate suit's idea of creative architecture. It's not interesting in the least. It's ridiculous.

And yes, Genral, agreed. That building in your avatar is painfully bad. Makes me cringe.

My usual optimistic self has much doubt about any of these. Especially the hotels on Congress. Hope I'm wrong but that rarely is the case.

I hate to point this out especially after Spaceman's above post but I've noticed that there has not been a single new proposal announcement this year. Unusual in the fact that we have seen new proposals announced during the first quarter of the past several years. It may be due to the fact that so many projects are under construction or in the works and developers are in a wait and see period.

I also wonder what effect the new council has made on future proposals and if we will see anything new announced anytime soon.

Thanks Dawg but you seem to one of the few on this board to sees the obvious. Things are slowing down in DT Austin...I hope it's just developers taking a breather. The Waller project will be the litmus test for further growth
