The new residence being constructed is well on its way to being ready for occupancy for the fall 2015 semester.

The University made the project a high priority in response to the growing student demand for more on-campus residential space. In addition to meeting student needs, the project incorporates a strong economic and environmental sustainability component, all of which align with the priorities identified in the University’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan.

“The new residence will provide a fabulous, energy efficient, quiet and safe space for students,” says Nelson Wagner, Associate Vice-President (Facilities Management). “The design of the mechanical systems includes radiant in-floor heating that also eliminates most ventilation noise, and the views from the rooms are going to be incredible.

I was at the mall this afternoon and noticed that Boe's (located between Smart Set and La Vie En Rose) has closed, with Smart Set closing sometime in the next 12 months or so.

Also, I was talking to Kevin, the pharmacist-owner of the Shoppers Drug Mart in the mall. He says they will not be expanding their physical footprint. In fact, they won't be getting the same fresh meats and produce that other stores will be getting. The Cornwall Centre store will be getting a walk-around cooler with packaged cold meats, veggies and fruit, similar to what already exists at several other Regina locations.

Saw a billboard on Highway 11 suggesting major upgrades coming to the waterslides at the Travelodge, coming this spring.

That's right. According to the hotel's website the "hotel pool and waterslide is currently closed for some exciting renovations. Keep an eye out for Soaked Waterpark opening Spring 2015"

Not sure how credible the source is, but I was talking to a Brandt employee today. He mentioned that the owners of the Pats made an interesting statement. The new multi-million dollar score-clock that was installed at the Brandt Centre was designed to be able to "Move" with the team; implying that a move out of the Agridome/Brandt Centre was a huge possibility. He also stated that the land just north of the Capital Auto Mall could possibly be the home of the new arena.

If there is an inkling of truth to this, I sure hope the city curbs the idea of making the same mistake Saskatoon did.

Put this thing downtown in the rail yards. Better fit than the football stadium would be anyway. Used more often, smaller footprint, etc.

The Pats rink moving from current location to north of auto mall would be brutal.

Good to see they're maintaining the same footprint. Parking at the Travelodge has always been brutal. When I worked there in the 90s, employees were required to park at the Sandman (now Royal Executive...Travelodge paid them for spaces, since the Sandman was in rough shape & never full) to ensure there were enough spots for TL guests. Even then, if we had a wedding, meeting, or other medium-sized event on a busy weekend, parking was nearly impossible (if memory serves, the hotel has 200 rooms. They basically have enough stalls for 1 car/room... add staff, wedding guests, Blarney Stone (at the time) patrons, and the lot was a gong show). Security spent most busy nights patrolling the back alley to ensure guests weren't parking in the apartments' stalls, or in fire lanes.

The waterslide area is in need of a major overhaul. Other than replacing the slide itself (it was blue when I worked there...and nearing the end of its useful life), nothing has been done to the pool area since the mid-90s.

From the video, it's clear this isn't just a cosmetic upgrade - even retiling the pools.

In my opinion this is just blue skying. This is all a long way off. Their preferred location will definitely be the former CPR yards, but one should always have alternatives. Of course the scoreboard can be moved, it was moved in and can be moved out. I can't see this happening though. It will be at least 7-10 years before this happens and by then the scoreboard will be obsolete. The fact that it can be moved, would allow them to negotiate some compensation from Evraz Place if they leave the Brandt Centre.

Fox example, the 2 huge Maxtrons at Mosaic were installed in 2012, but there is no way they are moving them to NMS.

Long overdue and somewhat expected after all of the renovations they have done to the hotel over the past couple years. Glad to hear they are doing this. I can't seem to access the facebook link, but are they removing the mountain 'cave tunnel' structure that you crawl up until you get to a dry slide around the back? Even though it created so much fun as a little kid going inside, I am sure the amount of bacteria in there is not a good thing. I always remember so much still water on each level with no where to drain to.

On a side note, I still think it is a sad thing that Maxwell's Waterslide park closed in east Regina. I know it was falling apart, but it most definitely added to the attractions of the city, and the warm weather activities. This brings me to the thought of a downtown City owned community enclosed waterpark/pool/water activity complex (unlike Sandra Schmirler or the Lawson) that would make another downtown attraction for visitors and residents.

I posted a while back about Toronto's re-developed Regent park area that is being changed from an inner city rundown neighborhood to new housing/condo/apartment buildings and their new Regent Park Aquatic Centre which is absolutely gorgeous! With the amount of property in downtown Regina that has not been built on so far, it would be amazing for the city to utilize before other private infill occurs.

Also, if the city offered a tax exempt for Cineplex, Empire, Rainbow, or AMC to build a movie theatre downtown, it would be a one more initiative to bring more people downtown after work hours.

I think the long term city recreation plan calls for a water park to be built by the Lawson/Field House. Who knows if/when it would happen, but I think the idea is there.

Yes, many birthday parties were spent there as a kid. The slide (at the time) was probably the best in town. The one at the Delta was way too short and not much fun, and the one at the Seven Oaks was old and dingy. The cave thing was a cool idea but didn't work very well. It was only big enough for one kid single file - not something you want to get into if you're claustrophobic at all - and the slide at the end was tiny and didn't slide well. I remember getting stuck in it all the time.

Sad to see it go, but excited to see what's next.

Yeah, again, great childhood memories there. It was a sad day when I heard they were closing it for good. I remember it was always packed on hot days. You had to wait in lineups for the slides because there were so many kids there. And the "Coca-Cola Big Gusher" (I think it was called). The big tube that filled up with water and then blasted you down the slide at high speed. I know Regina doesn't have many months of hot weather, but we should still have an outdoor waterpark somewhere. The kids of today are missing out on that experience.

I hope they remove it - from a health point of view, it should have been gone years ago. At the end of every shift, we would hose the entire cave down (flushing out the standing water...replacing it with slightly fresher standing water), and then spray it down with antimicrobial spray. This certainly kept it cleaner than it would otherwise have been, but it was pretty gross (kids liked to pee in there).

From a safety point of view, it should also have been removed long ago (older kids would stop on the waterslide & climb out/sit on the edge of the slide at the cave. We had a number of slip & falls, feet to the face... nothing serious, thankfully)

Anyone know what the plan will be? Still one waterslide? Any renders?

Also, has there been any progress to development of plot of land immediately south of the Delta Hotel (the former apartments that were torn down) that had a sign up showing a rendering of some building idea. I forget what it was called and who the developer is. I know Harvard is using the land right now for parking for the construction workers while Agriculture Place is under construction. Maybe the Delta wants to expand their pool and water-slide ;P!
