The Rideau Centre website has all the changes that are coming over the next while. New stores and their locations. So much change.

I noticed myself that they relocated many shops at the Rideau centre. Mrs. Tiggy Winkles which was located on the 3rd level where the Femmes shop is now located on the 1st level near the LCBO. Now it is going to be relocated in the 3rd level near Gymboree. I honk that the Starbuck's where I get my hot chocolate is going to be relocated in the new dining hall next to Smoke burger. Club Monaco, Aveda, and Occitane are also going to be relocated. Are Shopper's Drug Mart and the LCBO going to be relocated where the old food court was?

I think so. The mall's LRT entrance is going in there (the other will be at Rideau/William) but there's room for some more stuff too.

First off, I would like to thank Harley for all his foot work and sharing his pictures of nearly every major project in and around downtown.

Nordstrom looks great! Interesting how they used the same materials around the inside entrance as they did outside. Did not expect that.

I actually like the modern flair. No where near as cold as I expected. Not a huge fan of the funky new seating though.

In regards to the theatre, I agree with OTSkyline's sentiment; theatres don't belong in malls or the basement of office complexes for that matter. They should be clear landmarks that add to the street presence like Scotiabank Theatres. Best locations would be either Rideau at King Ed's, Queen at Kent, Lyon at Queen/Albert/Slater (pick one, anyone) or at Lebreton Flats.

You are probably right. We have the Bytowne cinema on Rideau and Nelson which show foreign, classic, indie, and documentary films. I am a member there and go frequently to that cinema. I wished that they renovate the Place de Ville Podium into movie screens, but it looks like that they are going to construct a LRT station on the ground floor where the first cinema was. Perhaps they should build a first run cinema in Lebreton flats. To me, the Lansdowne cinemas are not centrally located and I hate the selling of alcoholic beverages in a movie theater. I can walk to TD Place from my house. It takes roughly an hour to walk there in the summer and one hour and fifteen minutes in the wintertime. They are converting the former WEP cinemas into office space. You are right the Nordstrom is starting to look like the one in the video.

It doesn't necessarily say that Starbucks is relocating. It just says they're opening a new one. It's possible they'll keep both, one for foot traffic going to and from Rideau Street and the other to take advantage of foot traffic going to and from the food court/Nicholas.

Simons is going where Ogilvy's used to be, on the corner of Rideau & Nicholas starting at probably the 2nd or 3rd floor and going up to the top of the glass cube. It's just on that corner. Won't stretch an entire floor. 75% of what is going into the addition isn't announced yet, so wait and see. Theaters could still be in the picture, but time will tell. Doesn't change my life regardless, but there will be 30 new tenants... They wont say it all at once. What fun would that be.

Agreed, Thanks Harley!

As for the placement of a theatre, if you want an amazingly placed (IMO) theatre in a downtown core, look at the Cineplex in Montreal on St Catherines. Perfectly integrated and modern screening rooms.

I remember back in the 1990s AMC theatre was eyeing the old Caplan building (where the 90 George condo now stands) for a downtown cinema complex. This would have been a great location and could have added quite a bit of activity to the Rideau/ByWard Market area. Developers were spooked by the condition of the heritage facade which in the end was torn down and rebuilt, just like the Ogilvy.

Plus, that parking lot at the Metro/LCBO could be put underground with the only entrance/exit on George to allow for a grand pedestian entrance on Rideau... Just sayin.

The Montreal movie theatre does look nice. I find it tragic that they shut all the first run movie theatres downtown. I really miss the WEP cinemas very much. It was my favourite movie theatre. I preferred it to the Bytowne, Silvercity, and Rainbow cinema. I do not feel happy that they are constructing one in Lansdowne park. First of all, I hate the selling of alcoholic beverages in a movie theatre and it is not really located downtown. Are they seriously going to demolish the Metro and LCBO to build condo towers and retail shops? Do you know whether downtown Ottawa is ever going to have a first run movie theatre again?

We can say with 100% certainty that the Metro and LCBO will be demolished at some point. Claridge, the developer of 200 Rideau (Claridge Plaza) bought the Metro property a few years back. The condos on that property will likely be on the market sometime in the next 5-10 years.

There is a good chance that Downtown will once again have a first run movie theatre at some point, but no one knows when.

Hope Metro sticks around when that happens. Sure, the Loblaws is 2 blocks down the street and is arguably better, but with all the new people moving into the area two full size grocery stores are needed.

LCBO will have to stick around too, that's Ottawa's flagship store. Perhaps LCBO can expand as part of this?

According to my contacts at the LCBO King Edward (I work in the wine business) it is not going to be demolished and isn't part of the parcel that Claridge bought. I could be wrong, I'm just repeating what I heard. I think Claridge got Metro, the West parking lot, and half the East parking lot.

I also like the WEP cinemas. The smaller ones felt like you were in a friend's living room watching movies with some friends...so intimate. It was my favourite of the old-format, non-stadium-seating cinemas.

Do you think that there is any chance that they will build a first run movie theatre where the Metro is or in Lebreton flats redevelopment? I wrote to the manager of the WEP and he told me that unfortunately, he could not come up with an agreement about another movie theatre taking over the WEP cinemas due to the close distance of the one in Lansdowne park. He told me last June that they were demolishing the former cinemas and converting them into office space. What a major loss, especially if Ottawa is the capital of Canada. They should have at least one first run movie theatre opened downtown like they do in the other Canadian towns. Ms. Vanbuskirk said that she had no intention of putting new cinemas neither in the existing Rideau Centre or the expansion. She said that she was contemplating in doing it, but she had other plans.

Interesting perspective... Several years ago, when the kids were small, my partner and I went on a rare movie night... WEP had the right film at the right time so we paid and went in....

... and it looked like a friends living room... we looked at each other, turned around and left.

We get enough of living rooms, and wanted a big honkin' screen on our one night out

I feel that way for big action blockbusters, but I saw a lot of foreign and indie films at WEP in those small theatres and I found it enjoyable.
