I knew liquidation would start at around 10% at Target, why would people expect that they would give away the stuff on the first day of liquidation?! I won't go until everything is at least 30-40% off.
Secondly, I can confirm that prices at Target during a regular sale or end of season sale were sometime 30-50% off, most people who bought stuff there yesterday were not frequent Target customers. I even suspect that most had never been to the store ever or maybe once when it opened. I guess that if people continue to overpay for merchandise the insolvent Target Canada will be able to pay some of their massive debt. (5 billion $) Yep with a B. Their real estate folder should reach between 1.8 and 2 billion according to real estate analysts in the media.

It's also a matter of logistics. It would be tough to put the entire store on sale at 50%+ because there may not be enough staff to handle the demand.

Even at 10-30% off there are some deals to be had on items that typically never go on sale.

Target may have too-little, too-late cracked the secret to the Canadian shopping demographic. Giant "sale" and "liquidation" signs.

Has anyone heard any rumours on who might fill in the soon to be vacant target location or will it be subdivided?

And on Bass Pro Shop news it looks like they brought in the Pile driver to start work on the facade that will be where the hotel once stood... Cant wait to see it done.

There has only been speculation but my short list is:
JYSK, Home Outfitters and The Brick.

Maybe Canadian tire could move there.. if its big enough. That mountain rd location is getting way too cramped, very messy and quite often does not have sale stock. No room to grow there.

That is indeed an intriguing possibility for the old Target space. If Canadian Tire wanted a larger location for Moncton West, this could fit the bill. Another possibility is Lowe's. If Lowe's were ever to enter Atlantic Canada, they could also eat up that whole space too. I think that the presence of Kent in the region will make Lowe's think twice about moving east however, so I think this is unlikely.

Otherwise, I think the only option for the old Target space is to subdivide it for 3-4 other retailers.

At least the Northwest Centre has this option for repurposing. I think there are other Target locations in the region which will be in more dire straits.

And in other retail news, Danier Leather has joined the increasing list of retailers in trouble. They have lost millions in the last quarter and are reportedly looking at "all options" in order to right the ship.

They have not declared bankruptcy (yet), but store closures, liquidations and corporate mergers are all possible.

There are two Danier Leather locations in Moncton - the full store at Champlain and the factory outlet at Wheeler Park. I wonder which one does better for business? I could see at least one of these stores closing (do we really need two in Moncton?)

If the Wheeler Park location closed, that could ultimately mean three closely adjacent empty storefronts in that section of the plaza (Bowring, Smart Set & Danier). That wouldn't look very good.........

This makes a lot of sense. I really don't like their current set up anyway.

Starbucks filling the Smart Set void would make a lot of sense I would think.

Actually, they might take up the Champlain Dental Clinic space. They will be leaving. That would make for a pretty big Starbucks.

Due to flooding issues Chapters and Starbucks at Crystal Place will be closed until later this week when they will re-open.

What caused the flooding? Leaky roof? Is this related to the BPS construction next door?

I have heard that Party City is supposed to open somewhere in the city. Has anyone else heard this?

There is a job listing on indeed.com for the new Party City store in Moncton. I am thinking next to Ashley Furniture in Mapleton Crossing would be a good place for it or in the Phase 2 on Champlain Street in the same plaza as Mary Browns Chicken.

It could also go into one of the pending vacancies at Wheeler Park as well (Bowring or Smart Set).

Party City has one other location in the Maritimes - at Bayer's Lake in Halifax.
