City unveils new plans for downtown Regent Street by theater

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/86562...r-downtown-Regent-Street-by-theater.html

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY — Civic leaders are considering an ambitious plan to fill in a gap between two downtown entertainment areas with the redevelopment of a venerable old Salt Lake City block.

Mayor Ralph Becker Tuesday presented a proposal to revamp Regent Street in an effort to make it the mid-block connector between City Creek and the Gallivan Center and transform it into a place where people “gather, discover and connect.”

Becker and other city administrators unveiled the new schematic design plans for the Regent Street block located on the east side of the new Eccles Theater, between 100 South and 200 South.

The project would include retail and dining establishments, a public plaza, along with custom landscape architecture throughout the common areas. While the street would still be accessed by motor vehicle traffic, the area would also be accessible to pedestrians and could be converted to pedestrian-only access for events such as concerts, Becker explained.

“Since I took office, a primary object is to make downtown a gathering place for the region — and have it be a true welcoming environment for people seeking all kinds of activities that you can really only find in the downtown area,” he said. “We see this as part of what we are doing to make this the 'cultural core' of the region.”

While the final price tag of the proposed project is yet to be determined, Becker estimated that it will cost at least $10 million to complete. Ideally, the project would be finished by mid- to late 2016, concurrent with the anticipated opening of the new downtown “Broadway-style” theater.

Maybe I'm seeing this wrong but the drawings show the structure in supported/divided into thirds vertically and the rendering shows the structure divided into five vertical sections

I've been daydreaming for years about having those parking terraces reconfigured at street level. It's great to see it finally happening.

And, it's showing columns along the perimeter of the lobby.

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forum (this is not a reincarnation of plaid shirts/lumber jack whatever, although I do find that hilarious). Anyway I have been following for a while, and I would just like to point out that the columns around the lobby will only be temporary until the building is supported from the roof, that way they can still build up without the above support. You can find it in the presentations posted by SLC2GeorgtownU. Also, according to the timeline in those documents, the tower is well over 2 months behind schedule, it should be up to at least level 10! Also according to those timelines it should top-out august-september (although who knows considering the delay)

Oh wow that's interesting. Any reason as to why they're so behind schedule?

Apparently they poured a bunch of wrong concrete, so they had to tear it out before they could continue.

SLC2GeorgetownU that's an awesome find! Where did you get it from?

Every time I learn more about this building, I get even more stoked about it! It's going to quite the structural feat!

They are only temporarily put in the lobby for support until they reach the top and connect to the hat truss system and then the then the whole structure is jacked down, and the columns are removed.

Hey SLCGeorgetownU,

No need to shout and repeat what was just clarified. Wasatch Wasteland clarified that right after I had posted my comment. Look back at the previous posts. Thanks for posting that structural diagram and other info. Very cool!

On the diagram, right before the top of the tower, just under the word "Parapet" it says "SLC Height limit" I thought that there were no height limits for corner buildings, Correct?

That doesn't make sense. That is marked at 375 feet, and SLC has buildings taller than 375'.

Thanks for posting this, SLCtoGeorgetown! Very cool, loads and loads of interesting stuff in the links. This tower will be very interesting to watch rise, hopefully that will be soon since it is behind schedule.

That only happened 3 times in the history of Salt Lake since there's only 2 ( soon to be 3 ) buildings over 375 FT.

So they go through the hassle of getting the conditional use permit, and they only give us 8 addition feet in height?!
