What makes it interesting is that it's really a crossroads in between neighbourhoods--go east, west, north or south from here and within a couple of blocks you're in classically leafy neighbourhoods full of well-kept main streets and attractive houses. (Well, except for Bloordale, but it's better than this.)

I know, I can think of only a few intersections that come close to how ugly that one is for it's scale. It's such a waste to because it will take a lot of money to make it nice. You have the horrible Catholic High School, and the behemoth that is on the north east corner. The only way this intersection will change is if a meteor takes it out.

The scary thing is a handful of people at some point thought it was nice enough o build.

Was it actually built like that from the beginning? Or did it go through successive renovations and retrofitting to get to its current state? It makes me wonder if it was maybe the office building and the ground floor podium were a single institutional or commercial use like a bank or insurance company or medical clinic and then converted multiple stores like a strip mall, and the residential part added as extra floors.

It's a blue film that's pretty common around here. Typically gets peeled off towards the end of construction (though on Guardian they only kept the film on for the first few floors above the podium and then peeled it off during installation at every floor afterwards).

EDIT: At least, I am sure that it's film on the windows. Maybe the rest of the spandrel actually IS that blue...

Sadly I would have taken their second version with less glass over the current spandrel horror show. I think the city pushed them to do less stucco and not cheap out on materials. I wonder if this was their FU to the city (and also their condo buyers)?

I'm still not so sure it's film. In person it looks pretty uniform and you can see the film on the glass but not the spandrel.

Toronto has a freakishly blu condo as well. It's so blue you can't help but stare at it. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Hands down the ugliest building in the city to me. It's an old rundown commie block on top of a sub-par ugly 1960's office building on top of a hideous strip plaza. Come on people try and beat this thing.

St. Hub is a very poor substitute for the world's greatest rotisserie chicken:

"Swiss Chalet" outright copied the concept from the above place, which is one of a kind; established in 1944. Swiss Chalet is an even more unacceptable substitute than St. Hub. Rotisserie Chicken is a Montreal standard. Sorry Ontario, but lame chains just don't fucking come close.

Most of the current notable Montreal chicken joints — Laurier BBQ, St. Hubert BBQ, Chalet BBQ (where a split led to the creation of Swiss Chalet in Ontario, where ribs were added to the menu) — opened up between the mid-1930s and early 1950s.
