Interesting that Metro would propose this since when the bridge is complete there will be a Metro less than 5km away at Strandherd & Woodroffe. More grocery stores are welcome in Riverside South though, that Independent has a monopoly over there doesn't it? The bridge will also increase a lot of retail traffic to the Barrhaven towne centre as well!

As long as Ottawa keeps rubber-stamping the same old suburban — site plans and subdivisions, densification is not going to happen. And there is absolutely zero sign that Ottawa is willing to implement all the pretty words in its official plans, which disapprove of the same kind of suburban — that Ottawa keeps approving. Ottawa loves its suburban —.

I'm glad the City finally seems to be committed full grade separation of rapid transit, but damn, I just can't see how an elevated busway can be all that much cheaper than building rail right off the bat.

I'm OK with the lack of service to the airport, but I really wish they would extend the Confederation Line to the Corel Centre.

From what I gather ( I could be way off and it could be the opposite of what I say ) council has decided that it is okay to change the zoning to allow for a Brick, Lay-Z-Boy, McDonalds, a Bank, and another 4,900sqft until to be built instead of following the planning departments recommendation to refuse this amendment.

Thanks!

I think you have it. The decision on the motion is written in language that very few people, other than municipal planning wonks, can readily understand.

From what I can gather, there was no little to no discussion on this at Planning Committee and it was quickly recommended for final approval at Council. A cynical person would be wise to look at the lobbying activities related to this application and figure out what favours certain Councillors require from one another.

Well, Planning Committee was yesterday, so I don't think it's been approved by COUNCIL yet, as that doesn't start for another hour and a half.

Outdoor retailer Cabela's to land in Kanata

Robert Bostelaar, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: November 18, 2014, Last Updated: November 18, 2014 6:41 PM EST

Fishing, hunting and camping specialist Cabela’s is the latest retailer to announce plans to open in the burgeoning retail zone along Highway 417 across from the Canadian Tire Centre.

The Sidney, Nebraska, chain said Tuesday it will start construction in 2015 on a 70,000-square-foot store that will be its second in Ontario, joining an outlet that opened in Barrie in July.

The store will anchor a Taggart Realty Management development called Kanata West Centre, adjoining the highway and across Palladium Drive from the just-opened Tanger Outlets Ottawa.

Cabela’s, which bills itself as the “world’s foremost outfitter,” said the decision to expand to Ottawa was spurred by the retailer’s success elsewhere in Canada and its strong online sales, particularly in the Ottawa region.

“What better way to show Cabela’s commitment to serving our loyal Canadian customers than bringing a store to the nation’s capital,” chief executive Tommy Millner said in a news release.

The store will compete with established outdoor-gear retailers such as Sail and Le Baron, plus Canadian Tire and other department stores. It could also go up against another major outdoor retailer, Bass Pro, which in November 2013 announced plans for a 120,000-square-foot outlet in a retail development planned by Broccolini-Laurentide to the east of Tanger Outlets.

Bass Pro said its store would open in 2015, but has not started construction. The Missouri chain could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Taggart Realty vice-president Julie Taggart said Cabela’s, set to open in spring 2016, will be a major tenant in a development that will offer 250,000 to 300,000 square feet of retail space and, like the nearby Tanger Outlets, draw from the growing west Ottawa suburbs as well as Carleton Place, Arnprior and other Ottawa Valley communities.

Negotiations with other prospective tenants are underway, she said.

Cabela’s said its store will be built in a new, smaller format than its 150,000-square-foot “legacy” stores but will carry the same product range and offer customers an outdoor-like experience with a large replica mountain and “museum-quality” wildlife displays. It will also have an indoor archery shop, fudge shop and “— library.”

Looks like the standard Costco template.. relocation of the Innes Costco? I guess with these concept plans they have a lot of "artistic license"

So much potential on that site...

Unless I'm missing something, the link from the Trinity website doesn't look much like what was the subject of the site plan application in terms of site layout # of buildings etc.

Yeah the grocery store and other larger units seem to be removed... maybe it's artistic license/another potential concept or maybe there were other revisions not posted on the city's site.

the "Warehouse Club" looks like it is planned for the "future mixed use densification block" shown in the UDRP submission
http://webcast.ottawa.ca/plan/All_Image%...Design%20Review%20Panel%20Submission.PDF

UDRP did not give a favourable review in Jan 2014..
