Dear Sir:

I am Silvia Logan. I am a regular customer at the Rideau Centre. I wrote to the manager Ms. Vanbuskirk, she told me that they are not going to include new cinemas neither at the existing Rideau centre or in the expansion. She does not know what the former Rideau Centre cinemas will become in the future. She told me that the former cinemas are completely demolished. Ms Vanbuskirk told me that the construction workers are using the former cinemas as offices, meetings, and lunch breaks. Do you know what the former cinemas are going to become? Do any of your friends know the future use of the former cinemas? Do you by chance have any photos what the demolished cinemas look like now? I am curious to know.

Silvia, I don't have a photo, but if you take the escalator to the roof and go outside, you can see the demolition and steel frames that remain.

I might go to the Rideau centre on Tuesday. If I go up on the escalator which people used to go to the cinemas, and I turn right and go outside of the door, then I be on the roof. How can I see whether the cinemas are demolished, if there are no windows? Do you have a map or have you taken a photo what you have done? Just let me know!

I think theatres get some sort of geographic protection for films, so if Landmark builds a theatre at the rideau centre they couldn't get movies that Lansdowne is showing, which may be why Ottawa theatres are weirdly spaced apart.

Although I think it is too bad Rideau Centre didn't build a proper theatre before Lansdowne.

There is the Bytowne cinema down Rideau street, but it shows foreign, classic, indie, and documentary films. I am a member of the Bytowne. I use to go to the WEP cinemas a lot, but they closed down over a year ago. The WEP were my favourite cinemas and I did complain to the manager that I wanted it as a second run movie theatre. However, he did not listen to me. I do miss the WEP cinemas so badly. That is why I have been going quite frequently to the Bytowne, Rainbow, and Silvercity. I do remember in 2013, Ms. Vanbuskirk and her team were thinking about including new cinemas at the Rideau Centre near Simon's, but she changed her mind. I missed the Rideau centre cinemas too. I wished that she just kept her word. Don't you agree ? There is the Mayfair in Ottawa South which shows foreign films and second run movies. I never go to the Mayfair because it is not walking distance from my house. The Bytowne is closer to my house. Do you ever go to the Bytowne cinema?

I am a long-standing member of both the bytowne and mayfair.

In my opinion they are two of the good things about ottawa.

It's a shame that you don't hop the #1 or 7 and try the mayfair. They have an excellent programme, even if it is sometimes eclipsed by the Bytowne.

My wife and I used to go to the Mayfair for the double feature nights...liked that place a lot. Now, that addition on the mall looks much larger than I thought it would be, and it's more levels/floors than I thought it would be as well. I am gonna have to go check it out the next time I am working days...

I have heard that the new Rideau station for the LRT is suppose to go where the Scotiabank was.

One of the entrances to Rideau station will be there, yes. Another entrance will be directly inside the mall, where the old Food Court used to be.

It has been demolished down to the steel frames, the roof is the same level as where the cinemas were. You can't miss it.

No problem! I am going downtown tomorrow because I need to go to the bank and cash my check. I will be walking to the Rideau centre tomorrow at all four levels to see how much work they have done. I will definitely go up to the roof and take a look at the demolished cinemas.
