Buildings not aligned with the street, low-density residential from the 1980s and 90s, light commercial, swaths of undeveloped areas, an out of scale seniors home with the tackiest architecture imagineable, and a sea of parking lots. I can't even stand looking at it...

Nothing, because messing with that thick pancake it's carrying on its head would destroy value (end up with less sq ft) while being very costly as it's high-altitude construction work. Financially, no way it comes anywhere close to making sense.

I can't find a picture of this, but I remember as a child going to a Tim Horton's or something in Boucherville and my grandma laughing and pointing out the most depressingly hilarious sight to me. There was this grim seniors home connected via a glass corridor (almost an umbilical cord if you will) to a funeral home next door. 2 for the price of 1 I guess?

Everything here from the fact you have to cross a line of cars belching exhaust in your face to get inside the building, to the perpetually overflowing garbage bins, to the hideous pleated stretchy pants uniforms just adds to it's je ne c'est quoi. Anecdotally there is one near my house that they actually had to re-design the drive thru route because it so regularly clogged traffic on the main access road. Now it occupies a bigger chunk of the parking lot in a Disneyland-ride-style lineup which snakes back and forth.

Don't disagree about the drive thrus. The new look of their stores isn't so bad though. They've been redoing them all around here.

A step up for the building, but you still have to navigate the parking lot to get to it. Would it kill them to at least put the building up to the street with parking behind?

Money Mart on Winnipeg's once thriving, now sad-looking Selkirk Avenue in the North End.

Them and the stupid Kangaroo mascot one (Cash Money?). There is a perfect trifecta of awfulness on the TCH going through Calgary in one stripmall of one of these loan stores, a porno shop and a liquor store. Though it might be an Avis Rent a Car now. Either way, these places always seem to congregate together.

Yeah they built a new one by my work that isn't as bad. Best part is the drive thru line doesn't directly cut in front of the entrance. It is a step up. Those Wendy's / Timmy's combos are still a dime a dozen though and they're some of the worst.

I remember about 20 years ago, Tim Hortons began revamping their look from the brown aluminum siding building with the yellow oval sign to what you see in O-Tacular's photo. At the time, I thought it looked much better, but now it has a very late 90s fadedness to it.

That said, the early 80s brown aluminium-sided box design would look just as bad today, and also horribly dated.

The horrible thing is the brown aluminum box ones are still a blight on the landscape as many aren't renovated, they just build the newer one nearby. For instance look a couple pages back and you'll find one I posted from Calgary that is now a funeral services centre. The new Tim's is built right behind it. It's like those damn Pizza Huts! It's still a hut but now it's a Vietnamese restaurant, or a medical centre (as is actually the case for one in Calgary).
