I know this isn't permanent, but I'm dying to hear the full explanation, and have a feeling it wouldn't be sufficient an excuse

Thanks, I never thought of that. Perhaps as soon as the Georgia plaza is open there will be an easy route to the Kingston from Georgia Street by cutting through mid block. Which adds weight to the idea that the sidewalk by the mystery steps will not be open for through traffic. Any pedestrian traffic that might have normally gone back and forth along there is diverted to the new walk-through lane that was formerly the alley.

I'm sure the owners of the Kingston Hotel are just peachy with this recent development!
I'm sure some patrons of the Kingston may want to walk eastwards along Georgia St. (towards Rogers Arena) without a contrived detour.

Yes, it would help if they'd slap a coat of dark paint on the whole thing. And also, why didn't they have the steps going the other way instead of having people do a circuitous hair pin turn around those annoying white rail extensions. And because of the slope (going south from Georgia) maybe they could have had one or two fewer steps.

Whether the steps and garden are long term temporary or permanent there will be a safety issue because some people WILL just decide to walk out onto the road to get down the block.

I provided McMinson's pics and thread links to Price Tags' Telus Garden posting - and Gordon has picked it up - so we should find out soon enough:

Thank you! You read my mind because I was also thinking that Gordon Price would have a field day with that.

I'm guessing, It has a Georgia street address above the door. Perhaps it's a temporary entrance until the main Georgia entrance is finished.

I finally had a chance to get to the mystery steps today and I measured the sidewalk (under the very watchful eye of the lobby security, lol). It is precisely 1.8m, which I think is the required width. I'm still wondering about the little garden. Maybe it will be ripped out in a few months.

Cool thanks. It looked a lot smaller in some of the other angles. But at exactly 1.8m, I'm sure it's permanent. The garden... I don't know what to say.

Such a weird little area of an otherwise great building.

Hey we are not the greenest city for nothing. That (Telus) garden is to feed all those new office dwellers. Richards will soon be replaced by rows of corn.

A few recent pics by me:

Perhaps it's stairs leading to a sales centre, maybe they didn't really sell out!

I love the investigation of the mystery door, especially because I would have overlooked it.

Keep it up.

"In the world I see, you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Trump tower. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Shangri-La. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty lanes of Georgia street."

This seems extremely out of place on a busy downtown street. I'm not sure I understand their logic with this. If this is permanent, you'd think the least they could do is install a nicer railing.

Yup agreed! Glass-panel railings would be very nice instead of those white jarring ones.

and if this is only temporary, why bother with the exposed aggregate? seems like a rather fancy sidewalk for temporary use.

^ That seems to strengthen the case for a sales centre, possibly even for future Westbank projects elsewhere in the and region.
