I thought it must have become N Kingsley. There's a smart-looking line of utility poles marching north from Sunset between the backs of the Harvard & Kingsley houses.

Update: The County has an index map which shows that at some point 27th did not "T" at Vermont but went through at least two blocks more to the east to the other side of Menlo. This was probably changed in 1900 when the three houses were built. There is a woman whose last name is Ross listed in an index of church members and her address is 2672. This was in 1922.

It looks like the building in the picture above is now Terminal 3 at LAX.

When LAX first opened in the '60s (I think) all of the terminals were satellites. They were connected to the ticketing/baggage areas by underground walkways. It was thought to be the wave of the future. Why, I don't know.

I didn't want to leave out the two attractive houses on W. 18th Street. -and yes, they're gone as well.

I just noticed there's a building directly behind 'twin turrets', on the same lot. Did they give up their backyard for a commercial building facing the alley?

It's funny you mentioned Menlo, because there are some terrific homes on that street as well.

....just look at this trio. (the three houses that we've been discussing on Vermont at 27th are directly behind these houses)

I don't remember it coming up before. The white building to the right of the turreted house is the extant Matthias Apartments at 1801 S Flower. The turreted house shows up on the 1964 image at Historic Aerials, but has gone by 1972. Looking at the City Directories, I think the turreted house was the W A Brown and Sons Funeral Home at 1815 S Flower. I found a few references when I Googled them, but no pictures.

I even checked out a season 4 (1980/81) episode of 'CHiPs' because I remembered a chase finished in that parking lot. Sadly, even the building behind the turreted house had gone by then.

I found a 1998 LA Times article about the Pierce brothers called A Lively Business in Funerals. It contains the following quote:

"Intent on burying the competition, as well as their patrons, Pierce Bros. bought out W.A. Brown and Son, a former street car conductor and clothier-turned-mortician, who had the "largest casket display in the world" and offered a complete funeral for as low as $290 during the Depression."

I wonder if the casket display occupied the building behind the turreted house. No date is given for the buy out, but the article is roughly chronological, so it looks like sometime in the 1930s. They must have continued to use the original name as W A Brown and Son appears in the CDs into the '60s.

My guess ER is they wanted to get the flue higher than those attic windows.

Windows pose a vacuum and would draw smoke inside the house.

I just had a thought, maybe it's unfinished, and eventually it will be encased in bricks like the other chimneys? (there is a ladder there)

-frustratingly, there is no address on the back of the photograph. All it says is Pampas Grass, Los Angeles.

....and I don't see any street address numbers on the porch.

below: I am intrigued by this close-up. Is this a wooden zanja running in front of the house?

I'm not even sure if there's such a thing as a wooden zanja.......the zanjas that we've seen before on NLA have been made of stone. (see below)

Oh my God, I was just double-checking to make sure my 1880 'Pampas grass' photograph hadn't been posted before.

Well it hasn't, but two later photographs of the same house were posted by BifRayRock...and guess what,
the wooden zanja in my 1880 photograph was eventually replaced with a stone zanja a decade or so later.

below: Here are BRR's two photograph from the 1890s. (notice how the pampas grass has grown threefold!)
